Pixel 3 phone going blank during phone call

I just got my new phone and when you take it from your face to put on speakerphone the screen goes blank and I'm unable to do anything or even hang up the call

It should already be blank when you hold it up to your face (and turn back on when you move it away) - is that not happening?
Do you have a screen protector on your phone?

Sounds like your sensor is blocked by screen protector/case. Phone thinks you're still holding to your head. Can always hit the power button to activate the screen.
