False, I bought one yesterday outright and ended up returning it because I ran into the 'device is locked" issue

Yeah popping in an active (post-paid) SIM and waiting 24 hours should unlock it.

I think this got reversed. I have a message on mine that says Carrier Unlock - This device can be used on any network. Not sure if this was planned by Big Red or simply a mistake. I'd Wager the former after backlash, Who knows.

Takes time w/ a Verizon SIM in it.

If the device is unlocked, will the updates be managed still by Verizon or Google?

Re: Pixel 3 XL - Verizon Locked (Update: Blog Posting)

All updates are managed by Google I believe, based on past experiences Google store unlocked/Verizon version they all receive updates at the same time so there won't be any delay because of Verizon at least till now. Give or take a day or two based on staggered Google OTA rollouts.

Only difference is Verizon version can't be bootloader unlocked.

On the third generation and this question still comes up. lol.

Re: Pixel 3 XL - Verizon Locked (Update: Blog Posting)

Personally, I think Verizon's motivation is to stop users from doing exactly what they've been doing with Pixel phones, e.g., buy the Verizon model because you want to get it right now from a brick and mortar store then activate it on your carrier of choice... Pick it up at Best Buy, pop in your carrier's SIM and away you go. Obviously, that didn't result in new subscribers for Verizon's service.

Essentially, they've turned it into a PITA to buy the Verizon model of the newest Pixel phones if you don't intend to actually use it on Verizon. You're going to be faced with a new issue if you're not a Verizon customer: You will need to activate the phone with a Verizon SIM and wait for approximately 24 hours before you can move the phone elsewhere. So, where can you get a Verizon SIM card you can use for 24 hours?

I have no family members using Verizon. I have one friend whose carrier is Verizon; however, I doubt very much that she would be willing to let her own phone go without its SIM card for 24 hours just so I could use it to activate my Pixel 3 XL. Fortunately, I don't have that issue because I don't have the Verizon model, but it's not going to be convenient for those who bought the Verizon model Pixel phone to use on a carrier other than Verizon.

This is exactly what Verizon did with the new iPhone Xs and Xs Max. It remained locked for 24 hours when activated on their network. After 24 hours, one could swap sims. This is what they will be doing from this point forward.
