Pixel 6a Google Assistant bug

After setting up my wife's Pixel 6a including voice match for Assistant she tested it out by turning on various smart lights in our house, asking the temp and other requests. Assistant performed the tasks just fine, however no voice response was given with only the visual confirmation shown. I cleared the cache and data and started over. No joy. I even uninstalled Google updates, cleared data and cache and rebooted the phone. Installed G update and started over with Assistant. Again no voice response from Assistant.
Short of doing a complete factory reset (ugh) which is really a last resort anyone have any suggestions?

Did you double check the assistant settings on the general and check below for voice

Everything looks to be in order. Input voice works it6s just that the assistant is talking.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Look for assistant settings. Scroll down to assistant voice and sounds. Should be 3 settings to choose from there.

Weird. If she asks a general question (Hey Google, do you like me) it will vocally respond. If it is a specific question like "what's the temperature here" it will show the temp but without vocals.

Well then, short of the factory reset or uninstalling all updates and data in the Google app then reinstalling. I'm at a loss. Personally, I would start with the Google app.

In my first post I did write about clearing data and uninstalling Google app updates.
I would rather eat glass than do a factory reset, this sort of thing frustrates my wife to no end. She won't even go in Best Buy with me. She still has her P4a and can use it while I mess with her P6a phone so that's a plus.
The next step is Google tech support before the factory reset. Ugh.

So I spit out the glass and did a factory reset and set it up with my account. Google Assistant is still not talking back. So I did another reset in preparation for calling tech support. Google Assistant is working fine on my Pixel 6 Pro and her Pixel 4a. A conundrum to be sure. Oh well.

Stupid question but is the screen on when speaking to it? My assistant no longer responds on any phone unless the screen is off.

Huzzah!!! Fixed! After two factory resets without a fix and going through and comparing every setting between my P6Pro and the 6a I finally solved the problem. In one of my searches I saw a reference to the Google TTS Option-Amplify Speech Volume. See screenshot. Turned it on and success.
Interestingly that setting isn't turned on in my P6P. I might still call Support to see if there is another option.
Thanks to all who tried to help. It's much appreciated.

I told my wife I'm going to be picking her up a new pixel soon to be ready to replace her aging Moto G6, which is actually still running surprisingly great, battery life and all. Her response was "oh no, I hate new phones, such a pita to set up". So much for the excitement of a new flagship pixel lol. The funny thing is I set her phones up for her just like you do for your wife, everything except her work apps and a few others... but she still loathes new phones lol.

If her assistant was doing everything it was supposed to, except talking back to her on certain things, and I said I was going to try a factory reset, she'd tell me "the heck you are, it's fine, leave it alone!"

Your wife let's you get away with way more than mine does lol. She's a sweetheart until she hears the words "factory reset" and "your phone" in the same sentence  then she's ready to rumble ;)

It's like you are peeping into our home this weekend. It's a major emotional rollercoaster ride, even for our cats who take to hiding under the bed. This last reset I did was while she was sleeping (I get up at 3am). Since she has most of her passwords written down I can take care of most of her sign in while she is in blissful slumber. Wish me luck for the rest.

I will... and I know you're going to need it ;) Like you mentioned a while back our wives could be sisters lol.

Addendum: I just watched Flossy Carter's review of the P6a and he asked Assistant to do something and it responded visually and not with voice as well. So maybe that is how it's supposed to be on the P6a (on Android 12). My Pixel 6 Pro is running A13 Beta. So that might make the difference.

My Pixel6 is on 12 and it does voice. Maybe it's a limitation of the 6a?

Well....with some minor wailing and gnashing of teeth we got her P6a all set up and tweaked to her liking. My Pixel 4a is in the trade-in kit box to go to Google for the $300 credit, her P4a to be her backup. Peace and happiness has again graced our home. Whew!
As far as Assistant not speaking it very well might be the default setting to insure privacy. Fixed that. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Android? The Google knows. Bahaha!
