Pixel 9 Bluetooth compatibility with car Bluetooth

I have a 2006 BMW and I have been using without any issues the build-in hands-free-calling connecting my Samsung Galaxy S10. For audio I use another adapter that uses the radio to play music.
when a phone call comes in the car Bluetooth takes over and picks up the phone.

So it was time for an upgrade and I got the Pixel 9. It pairs and connects fine as before, it shows on the dash as a "native' Bluetooth connection, BUT if a regular call comes in it switches to phone speaker/head buds/regular phone connection. I hear over Bluetooth in the car a beeping sound, but it does not work.
For all other Bluetooth devices I can see "use for phone calls", "use for media", but not for the car connection, well at least not after the first phone call comes in. Initially it shows it and I select "use for phone calls", then after the first test call these options disappear.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to AC!

Do you have Bluetooth buds or something similar that it could be connected to instead of your car over Bluetooth for calls?

Welcome to Android Central forums. That is an odd thing. Not owning a Pixel there's really no way for me to test this or experience your issue. A quick search though turned up a similar question on Reddit with some conversation going on about it there.

Not sure if it will hold any answers but there seems to be more activity in that thread than here so maybe more suggestions too.

Not to sound discouraging but I found a similar thread for the Pixel 8. I can't imagine this is wide spread or we would be seeing more posts about it. Maybe it is a compatibility issue. You see this thread here.

Let us know what you find out.

Best wishes.

Mine tends to do the same thing or callers can't hear me. This has happened in 2 vechiles so I know it's the phone.

I've had the problem with my Pixel 9 in two my BMW's now. The phone connects to the car just fine, Android Auto works fine, etc. But if I'd try and make or receive a call its often just completely silent or static. Its started working more frequently recently, but its clearly the phone as the two cars have different operating systems and I didn't have any problems with my Pixel 7 or 8

I'm guessing you all have checked this, but just in case -- go to Settings>Connected Devices, and tap the gear icon next to the car. Is Phone Calls still toggled on there?

Mine is, Yes. These days it at least works more than it doesn't. When I first got the phone 80% it didn't work.

I started experiencing this same issue about a week ago.
A call will come in and i will hear the person just fine until a notification pops up on my phone.
Then the call will be fully silent. If i try to call back while still on bluetooth, the call will be silent. This has been an issue on my pixel buds pro and the bluetooth on my toyota. ( i am using the pixel 9pro xl)
have you guys found an issue to this problem yet?

I had a phone chat with google support and I'm pretty sure I knew more than the guy did. They eventually decided to send me a replacement set of Pixel Buds.
You said, "I already discussed this on the Android Central forums," and they immediately said, "Welp, we don't have anything to add."
