Pixel: Quick Charge 3.0 or USB-C PD?

I have a Moto Z Force but I agree that the Neckteck car charger is good for the price and will do the job.

I can second those recommendations, I had already mentioned the car charger before but I guess some of my walls of text get skipped over by the TL;DR'ists. ;)

That Nekteck car charger is cheap, safe, effective, well built, comes with a straight or coiled cord, and has a second port. Unless you also need to charge a Macbook or something in the car, I wouldn't look any further. Yeah the built in cord is blah, but it's cheap enough it's easy to forgive.

The Anker 5-port AC charger is nice if you need that many ports, but again, for anyone that wants a small single port charger and/or need a good long (6ft) cable to go along with it: just get Google's 18W charger (same as what comes with your Pixel).

$35 might seem a ted steep but consider this, the cheapest 3ft cables are still like $10+, probably $15+ for the cheapest 6ft (and they're harder to source)... The cheapest and in-spec 3rd party charger is close to $20... $15 + $20? Not worth the potential hassles.

The Black Squid cable (~$12?) is nice if you absolutely need/want a fast data cable that's also a good charging cable. There's slightly better built (single piece plugs instead of stamped and folded metal) cables that are also slightly cheaper but they'll be USB 2.0 - same charging abilities but slower for data (like the 6ft cable that comes w/phone).

Anything else I've seen that's USB 3.1 / TB compliant is usually at or over $20. I bought one by Kanex that's definitely nicer built than that Black Squid and even has smaller plug housings (also smaller than what Belkin is using) but it ran me $23.

Anker's PowerLine USB 2.0 cables seem fine, nice build, there was a recall around some of the 3.0/3.1 tho.

Yeah, I just read your post. You gave a lot of good detail.

From the looks of it, Aukey's isn't even remotely PD compliant despite all their marketing about it...

I think you're better off with Belkin's or Verizon's PD chargers if you absolutely must have one and don't their price (and single port/device arrangement) OR the cheap Nekteck on Amazon...

I bought this Aukey car charger before I saw Nathan's review. The issue he is stating, if I understand correctly, is the Aukey is stating 9v/3a, but in reality, it is 9v/2.4a. Since the max that my Pixel XL will pull is 9v/2a, this should not be an issue. And so far, I have had no problem with this charger. Futher experience will tell, but for now, I would recommend this charger.

I bought this Anker 5 port that was listed as a 3 on the spreadsheet--

I bought this 6 ft Anker for the USB-C PD port above--

Just want to make sure this is a "safe" pairing for my XL. Can anyone confirm this cable pairing is good? I am not tech literate or tech savvy, so sorry for having to ask. Thanks!

The charger is pretty good IIRC, the cable not so much. It's totally safe but you might actually see some voltage drop with it and slightly slower charging <50%...

I actually sent Nathan K the 3ft one for an evaluation and he was pretty underwhelmed with the thing, it performs worse than Anker's own PowerLine ("same" model minus the +, non braided version) which makes no sense whatsoever.

It's not a huge issue, like I said it is safe (wired correctly etc), just not optimal and whatever issues he observed with the 3ft are probably magnified at 6ft.

I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with how some companies that were usually pretty reliable sources have been handling Type C, I'm looking at you Anker/Aukey/Monoprice (tho MP is the worst offense by far).

I've probably said this a bunch of times, possibly even in this thread... But the 6ft cable that comes with Google's own 18W spare charger is really nice, totally fine for up to 60W, small plugs, good build, extruded connectors, etc.

$35 might seem a little steep but given the state of the market it's really not... The Anker cable mentioned above runs $15, the cheapest well vetted 3rd party charger out there runs $18... That's like $2 less in total than Google's charger+cable combo.

Granted if you need one and not the other it's not quite as appealing... Apple's current 6ft C to C cable goes for like $20 IIRC and it's one of the best out there, good even for 100W laptop charging. It's on sale thru the end of the year over the whole donglegate debacle...

Had I not bought a spare charger from Google I might've bought that Apple cable, shoot I still might. Just check Nathan's post on G+ to make sure you're getting the new version and not that old that went thru a soft recall, the box is totally different so it's easy to spot.

I'll link back to it in a min if I end up buying it... I thought the phone came with a 6ft but recently realized it does not. I don't desperately need a 2nd long one but it comes in handy.

Repost from another thread regarding 6ft cables, TL;DR: just buy an OEM one! The potential hassles aren't worth the $5 you might save otherwise... Unless you need it for fast data (vs just charging and USB 2.0 speed data), gotta go aftermarket then but expect to pay $30+. Repost:

It's hardly a unicorn, they're tougher to find but there's at least half a dozen well vetted 6ft Type C cables out there. This list below isn't re-linked enough, it focuses a bit more on 3.0/3.1/TB cables (which tend to be pricier) BUT it has several 6ft USB 2.0 recommendations (along with some faster ones and even an 8ft I'm almost tempted by).

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...9f_TX8/pubhtml

It's curated by Nathan K who has collaborated with Benson, unlike the other often linked sheet which is attributed to Benson but not actually curated by him, and from what I've seen a little less well maintained... No discredit to the author tho, they just have a slightly different focus.

In any case, assuming you want to avoid paying $30+ for your 6ft cable and you only need it for USB PD fast charging, the two best options are actually the OEM ones. Apple's is currently $20 thru the end of the year (donglegate sale, no kidding), and is probably the best overall based on actual evaluations:

USB-C Charge Cable (2 m) - Apple

I'm about to purchase one myself... If you don't wanna give your money to Apple for whatever reason, or you prefer a more rubbery grey shade of white, Google's cable is $25 but it might not suffice for charging a big MBP (more than enough for phones and even the standard MB or smaller MBP tho):

https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...usb_type_c_usb_type_c?hl=en-US&token=stWuBRHO

It's a slightly updated version of the black one that comes with the older Google dual charger but both are fine IIRC, I think I like the strain relief on Google's better than Apple's but that's somewhat subjective and would require long term use to bear out any true significance.

The only thing I'd say about Google's somewhat overpriced cables is that they make a lot more sense when bought with a charger. At $25 even Apple's cable is cheaper (thru Dec at least), but at $35 with a spare 18W charger Google's is nearly a bargain given the messy messy state of aftermarket cables:

https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../store.google.com/us/?hl=en-US&token=sK9xhNcp

Or at $40 with the dual charger, tho that one won't max out charge speed on the XL (tops out at 15W with one device, 11W with two).

Thanks for posting! I decided to return the Anker 5 port and Anker 6 ft cable. The 6 ft red cable didn't plug in "well" to the phone like the Google charger does.

I decided to buy an extra Google charger, since that works well and has the 6 ft cable.

OK, so for car chargers, I am not clear on the best charger to use with a Pixel.

Not sure the question got answered about the real-life advantages of the Belkin PD car charger.

Any updates or clarity on this topic?

I have been using the Tronsmart car charger. It has a 5V/3A USB Type C port and a 5V/2.4A USB A port. I've had it for a while, and it works great. I've had it since I bought the Nexus 5X, and I've been using it with my Pixel for a month.

I have 2 of them.. They do work and my Pixel XL 128GB shows rapidly charging. I have used the USB C to C for my Pixel and used a USB A to micro USB to Turbo charge my son's Motorola G5 Plus phone at the same time.

Note the company recommends not leaving the plugs in the lighter outlet when not using it to charge the phones.

Very nice sir. I definitely will be getting this charger. May I ask what USB C-C you are using for the car? I assume you ordered another cable because the pixel only comes with 1 USB C-C and 1 USB A-C. If so can you provide a link. I can see why they don't want people leaving it in the lighter outlet LOL. Another thing I was wondering is why did the Pixels come with USB A-C and the adapter from A-C. Might be over thinking but just curious.

Benson Leong recommended Amazon brand C to C. I use them in my car without any problem I am fixing to buy one more because I need a longer cord than the 3 foot one

I've had my Pixel (original) for about 8 months now and only in the last week did I learn about this unique PD charging technology for the phone, and just because something has a USB-C charge port, doesn't mean it's PD.

The Benson Team spreadsheet really opened my eyes to how much he crap is out there. I've experienced a lot of it myself too.

The reason for my post is to NOT recommend this Anker car charger.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU6222103

I had it for my previous phone, and this has already overheated and permanently damaged the life of my battery.

I like a lot of Anker products and lean towards them, but I've also had my fair share of crap from them too. At least, for the most part, I've had little support issues with them.

They don't seem to carry a PD car charger and I've already put in an order for Nekteck attached cable out top, and not the side.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU6222103

A. The price was higher, assumed better quality (frequently not the case though)
B. Newer than the versions shared on Benson Team's spreadsheet.
C. Seems like a fairly new product too, with the oldest review on Oct 23, 2017.
D. Has "PD" in the name title.

I'm optimistic, but on the fen end that it'll change as fast as the OEM Google wall charger. I hope it will manage and prevent overheated battery issues. I'd rather have that piece of mind for a battery I can't replace, than superfast charging.

A good battery life means I don't have to charge it as often too.

Thank you to all the people here for taking the time to share your experiences.
