Hi, i have just taken delivery of a new pixel slate. The device will connect the main router signal but when I move upstairs, it will not connect to the wireless access point signal that I have to extend the wifi range. I have other devices connected to the access point so I know that it is not something faulty with that. Any help much appreciated

Thanks

When you say it won't connect, the device doesn't see the access point or the device sees it but will not allow you to input security details to connect or it sees it will allow you to enter security details but still won't connect? If it is the latter please ensure you are entering the correct password. I just fought with this last night, I kept trying to put in "four" when it was "for" and believe me I was positive I had the right spelling.

What brand is this access point?

Anyway there is a Pixel Slate forum here and I can request that your post be moved there but to reply or really get any help you will have to register an account. This link will help you do that... https://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/409154-join-android-central-community-new-post.html

Moderator will you please move this to the Slate forums.

ok I have created an account, thank you for the swift response. The access point is a TP Link. The password should not be an issue, it is a seamless transition between the two signals normally. e.g. full signal downstairs by the main router, then walk upstairs (signal drops slightly on stairs) then move to the room with the access point and it boosts back up to full. What is happening with the slate is when I move upstairs, it does not pick up the access point signal and stays on the signal from the router downstairs. I have not experienced this on any other device, they all transition between the two seamlessly therefore I am thinking it is an issue with the slate rather than the access point.

Welcome to the forum.

Other than what you see as a boost how do you know something is connected to the access point or not?

What happens if you turn off WiFi and turn it in again once you're upstairs? I'm wondering if it had something to do with signal lock, even though it's basically the same signal.

Welcome to Android Central! I moved this to the Pixel Slate forum.

I've had this kind of problem with access points in the past as well. I know this isn't a direct solution, but in the near future, you may want to consider upgrading your wi-fi network to a mesh system, like the Google Nest Wi-fi system.

One thing you could try is to go into the device settings, select the access point's SSID, and turn on the Prefer This Network option.

If you're trying to do it "transitionless" (wherever you wank, you're connected), try this:

Use the same SSID, WiFi encryption (AES, TKIP+AES, whatever), security (WPA2 personal) and password on the router and the access point. Wired Bridge with two WAPs using the same SSID goes into a little more detail. (Ignore "second router - that's your access point. It's just usually cheaper to buy a second router and "emasculate it" [static IP and DHCP disabled, connected by one of its LAN ports, not the WAN port] than to buy a wired access point [although the TP 1200 is pretty cheap].)
