Pixel XL2 In Sunlight

I'm trying to do my due diligence before making a decision on a new phone. Right now the Pixel 2 XL is my most likely contender. My concern is the screen. I'll try to give a look at it in store, to see how I like it in general. My problem is that I won't be able to take it outside, for obvious reasons.

And, that's where I have had the most trouble. I'm coming from a Samsung S6, and in very bright sunlight I literally cannot use the screen in a normal fashion. I either need to find a place with some shade or hold up the phone so that it's blocking some of the sunlight so that I can make out what's on the screen. In moderately bright sunlight, if hunch over it, put my hand up around the edge and quint, I can manage most things.

I do NOT want a repeat of that. So, I'd love to hear people's experience with the phone in sunlight.

I haven't found any problems in sunlight. Like any device, it's still not ideal to look at things in sunlight, but things on the screen are still easily visible. At work, I have to park in a structure that's about a 12-15 minute walk to where my office is, so I often read a book while I'm strolling to the office -- no issues there. (And yes, I'm looking up frequently to make sure I don't walk into anyone or fall into a fountain.)

My Pixel 2 XL is the first phone I've owned that has a screen I can actually read when I'm outdoors. I first noticed this when I took my phone out of my pocket while I was walking my dog through the park. Even when I hit a patch of extremely bright sunlight, so bright that it was reflecting back off the phone like a mirror, I only needed to tilt the phone a bit and I was able to see clearly. I didn't once have to move over to a shady spot, or shield the screen in any fashion.

Make sure you're not doing that "distracted walking" in a crosswalk if you're in Honolulu. First offense will cost you $15 and repeat offenses will cost you $75 - $99. Started in Honolulu and may be working it's way to a city near you.....

My HTC 10 was virtually unusable in the sunlight so I understand your concern. I've had no problems either. I left my 2 xl set at 50% brightness with auto brightness on and have had no issues in the sunlight.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware of that -- I go there at least once a year, since I have some family there.

So far in sunlight I can see it. Is it as good as Samsung display w/ the brightness? Definitely not... But I still can see it.

That said the level that Samsung displays go to in sunlight is beyond anything I normally see in any other smartphone.
