Pixelbook Pen battery life?

For those of you with the pen, how long is the battery lasting? I'm only getting about 3 months or so out of brand new alkaline AAAA batteries. I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that Google estimates about 6 months. I wish it was possible to turn off the pen when not in use.:-\
