Play Movies from Flash USB.... OTG cable and what else?

I understand that I can put movies on my flash drive and watch them on the Nexus 7 using a OTG cable.

I'm a little confused about the next step.

What is the difference between Nexus Media Importer and MX Player and which one will I need to use to be able to watch movies.

I'd like to hear an answer to this as well. As far as I remember, I had to actually transfer a movie from tumb drive to the tablet to watch the movie with Nexus Media Importer.

Got it.

I want to watch them straight from the flash drive. Transferring the movies to the Nexus will just take up much needed space.

The unmodified Nexus 7 does not permit communication with external storage devices attached to it's microUSB port. Nexus Media Importer acts like a translator that permits your Nexus 7 to connect and understand the file storage device attached to the microUSB port. However, it ONLY allows READING from the attached storage and all such reading must be made thru the NMI program itself. Further, only certain types of files are recognized, mostly media types.

Fortunately, NMI allows you to either copy the file from the storage OR STREAM that media to designated destination programs. You can stream movie files to MXplayer, for instance, but you can designate whichever app you have available to receive the stream. If the app can not handle that type of file, it won't work, so something like MXplayer is great because it can play most movie file types and Coding.
