I recently got some bluetooth speakers and want to play audio from youtube through them, the problem is if I turn the screen off or switch windows from youtube the audio stops. Also, when I am playing youtube through the speakers the screen will not go into sleep mode after a period of inactivity.

Anyone know a fix for this? thanks.

That's the way Youtube works. There's no way, that I know of, to force Youtube to keep playing even though the screen is off, or the app is closed out. This is only with Youtube and other video related apps. Music services such as Pandora will work just as you want it to.

I thought the recent update let you do this. There's an option in the background to keep playing.

There is a work around one iOS that doesnt seem to work on lollipop (I'm a recent re-convert to android)...

You could open the YouTube video in safari and then lock the screen. Then look at the quick settings drawer (bottom drawer) and the music controls that are always there would restart the video with the screen off.

I realize this doesn't work with chrkme, at least not that I can tell, but this may be useful to someone.

As to the official feature to listen in background - I have not been able to find it in the settings.

I wasn't able to find that in settings either.

Settings>background and offline>playback

Running the latest version. 6.0.13 of the app.

You can use Black Screen of Life to turn off the screen while YouTube stock app is playing.

I can't post links because I just created my account, but you can search for "Black Screen of Life" in YouTube and see how to use it (when you search it in google play it doesn't show up unless you put apostrophes).

Re:p Bluetooth enabled background play hack sreen off

Found a Workaround:
YouTube ver 10.37.58
Android 4.4.4 KitKat
Droid Ultra

Works on data and WiFi. Works for playlists/mixes! I did this using a liked videos playlist.

Most of my SETTINGS are off, idk if this makes a difference though
General tab› Limit mobile data u... OFF
Notifications tab› OFF

-Select CAST symbol with (wifi/rectangle button) on any main screen or video, located at the top next to search button
-Select any Bluetooth device
My phones Bluetooth setting is still off though
-Play video, video will show up in notification panel
-Press skip button to go to next video
-As soon as it changes and tries to buffer next video, hit recents app button and switch app. Move through playlist with the skip buttons in notifications panel.

Voila... Video plays in background and with screen off. Still have to deal with ads though... :)

I installed firetube from the Amazon underground app store. It has an audio only mode which doesn't play the video. It's on by default and hence allows to play stuff in the background.

Nexus 7 '13.... Android M

Update on my workaround:
Cast icon is gone :( can no longer use this feature at all now. I didn't take any app updates either, only restarted my phone twice since my last post.
...Was it a bug? Some kind of soak test by Google?
