i have a verizon GS3 and when i connect it to any computer it recognizes it as a cd drive, i have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled the correct drivers but still nothing, i cant figure it out. Please help me its so annoying, i need to back up everything on my phone cuz i want to do a clean wipe and install a rom

I assume the USB connection is on Mass Storage?

Is there any data other than app data on the Internal Storage that you actually need? If everything is on the SD card, you can use a card reader.

Yea it's on the mtp thing

Not really, I can transfer those things on the phone but I don't want to have to be taking out my sdcard every time I wanna put something on my phone

Did I do something wrong on my phone cuz it didn't do that before

What operating system do you have? In order for MTP to work you have to have Windows Media Player 10 or above (if on XP). Did you reboot PC after installing drivers? Also, try a USB connection in back of PC not the front.
Make sure whatever system you have is up to date. In "Device Manager" make sure the drivers are listed and installed properly (no triangles).

I don't have an S3, so I don't know for sure what selections are in your USB connection menu--but is there an option for "USB Mass Storage" or "Disk Drive" that is separate from MTP? They're not exactly the same, and when Devinator asked if you were set to Mass Storage, you replied that you were set to MTP. The ideal setting to see your phone as a drive is USB Mass Storage.

For my RAZR Maxx, I notice occasional recognition delays when plugging it into my PC. It may take up to 30 seconds for it to show up, and sometimes I have to unplug it and plug it back in again for it to register.

Same with my X2. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds.

No there's no option for mass storage that I know of, is there some MTP divers that I need?

I've connected to 4 different computers, I tried it on vista, Windows 7 and 8 and the same thing happens, that's why I'm thinking it's my phone. I've tried all USB ports and before only one would recognize it and now none of them do

I assume you've tried rebooting the phone already? If all else fails, a factory reset would probably do the trick, although it's a hassle.

OP wants to get a custom ROM on there anyway.

Well, you can always do it once, then try and get the new ROM on there and see if that fixes the problem.
