i dont like using the hangouts app for text messaging. I've failed at getting everyone I know to use whatsapp so I'm looking for a good app I can use for sms / mms.

Its important that it work with my regular number as I dont want to use any type of PIN or username because those apps dont work if the person texting you doesn't have the same app.

Free is awesome but I'm willing to pay up to $10 for a good app.

Any recommendations will be appreciated. OR, if there is a way to use whatsapp as my default text app even when people text me who dont have whatsapp that would be great!

I really like textra! Lots of nice features, yet it is simple and straight forward

+1 for Textra. Just an overall really well done app. Free, clean, light, and super functional. I've gotten two of my buddies to convert in the last week. Another one you will likely hear about is 8SMS. I tried this out and liked it, but did find Textra a little better.

If you want something that is crazy customizable, you probably wan to look at GoSMS and Handcent. Like Textra they are native SMS apps, those other two let you pretty much set every single aspect of the app, colors, bubbles etc.

Using 8sms now but textra is good too. 8sms has a couple more features included but can't go wrong with either.

Handcent sms, go sms, chomp sms and Textra sms seem to be the more popular apps. A lot of users appear to be using Textra, so you might want to consider trying it.

Op here... I tried textra yesterday. I'm gonna give 8sms and go sms a shot over the next 2 or 3 days.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.

I loved Textra when I had it. Although it is only a list of current conversations and then you pick one to send a new message to that person. Which is exactly what Hangouts with SMS does. So I am adapting to the Hangouts and I uninstalled Textra. I use to love using tons of different apps and keyboards and stuff that all did the same thing but i'm over that now. Hopefully Google continues to improve Hangouts.

Cool. Let us know how you enjoy the others and which one is your favorite and is possible, what you like about it over the others.
