Please help: My Bluetooth device keeps disconnecting!

Am using a BT headset and suddenly within the last month or so, it randomly disconnects right in the middle of a call.

Ive tried multiple different headsets but it keeps happening. I even got a new (refurbd) HTC M8...same problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Driving me crazy as I rely heavily on hands-free talking for work.

FYI-ive already cleared the cache and done a factory reset.

Indeed.

I read somewhere that adding your BT as a "trusted device" in the "smart lock" section might work.
Ive done it but have yet had a chance to test it.

Is wi-fi on when this happens? If so, it might be interfering, since Bluetooth uses 2.4 GHz. If you have a 5 GHz band, try connecting to that wi-fi network. Otherwise, try turning off wi-fi while using Bluetooth to see if that's the problem.
