Please help!! Screen goes dark while talking.

Hey guys, just got my new droid mini and while I love it I have one major issue.
I noticed while I was talking I wanted to place it on speaker, as I pulled the phone away from my ear the screen came on for a split second then disappeared. I have tried pressing the volume and power button but nothing. I was actually unable to even hang up the phone. I went into settings and found an option to end call with powed button but I still can't use speaker or look at contacts or anything while talking.
I hope someone has had this issue and can help me. Thanks in advance. - Dan

Welcome to Android Central! Sounds like a problem with the proximity sensor. Do you have a screen protector or a case on your phone?

I am inclined to agree with B. Diddy as far as something is up with the software to make it quirky like that.

I have the otter box defender series. It has a built in screen protector. It's kinda like a piece of Tupperware for your cell, I will remove and see if that helps.

Yeah, that might be a problem. Since the proximity sensor is activated when you start a phone call, it's trying to sense if your ear is up against the phone so that it can turn off the screen to avoid inadvertent presses. But if it's actually sensing the case or screen protector, then it might not think you've taken the phone away from your ear, and will keep the screen blank.

Thank you very much, I took it off and it's working fine, glad it's not an issue with the phone but bummed out I will need to bring back a really nice case. Thanks for the help

I have a mini with the otterbox case (defender) and no problem. Maybe you have the Commuter case?
