Please Read: Important Information Regarding Task Killers

I find that alot of tasks that I constantly kill keep restarting themselves automatically (like Music, Skype, or CityID). Would it make sense to just leave these apps alone then and not keep them on my auto task manager list since they will probably eat more memory trying to restart constantly?

Im pretty sure some apps will restart once you kill them just because they are supposed to. Just like you wouldn't want to kill your alarm and it not start back up again- that would be no bueno. Same with CityID, it has to start back up because it has to be running for calls.

I had posted earlier I thought the phone ran better with ATK installed and running auto kill. I uninstalled it because my droid X has locked up a few times now and froze. It still seems to be freezing up, anyone else here running ATK all the time? This seems to be a big issue with this phone - as fast and amazing as it is, it seems to get hung up a lot. Hopefully 2.2 will be the cureall.

I have been using ATK full time and I can honestly say I haven't experienced any hanging issue, I had it do it one and it was because of a application that I installed that I figured it wouldn't work but I was curious to know for sure, as soon as I ran it the unit locked but I was able to open ATK to close it and uninstall, no issues since.. From my experience with the app, it is great.

Never had a problem with it locking up after killing :/ thats weird but I've read that a few people have had this happen to them

I'm only using a task killer right now to stop the stock services I don't need from running in the background. It's a hassle to stop them individually.

ATK has been working great on my DX. No automatic rebooting. I really wish I can get permanently rid of those persistent apps that I will never use.

so of course in othe threads I have posted I had problems with caller ID read out, Or alramclock/timer not working right and god knows what else, Shortly after getting the X The verizon store had a droid x class. I went cause Im tottaly green to smart phones as this is my first. I learned alot of different things I didnt realize the phone was able to do and how to do it. But the first thing the guy said is I just installed the Advanced task manager app, this will help with your battery life. He put the widget on my home screen so alls I had to do a few times a day was hit this widget to kill the apps. I had on my phone for a month. After discovering why other people I new wth the phone was able to use caller Id reasd out and there alarm clocked worked. I just thought ok maybe the next update will fix this problem. wasnt to concerned about it!, I recently joined the motorola forum and discovered other people were having the same issues as me, the common demonator was the advanced task manager. the guy from motorola emailed stating he doesnt know why verizon is just putting these on the phones, these are not needed at all. He recommened I uninstall the app and do a shut down then turn back on to see if this took care of the problem and it did. my battery is actually alot better going two full days with good usage( texting, calls, facebook, camera I take alot of photos). also my caller ID readout works just fine and so does my alarmclock/timer, Plus I noticed I started getting proper updates of ther weather and notifications that I orginnaly set my phone to get and never did get them. I was getting ready to turn this phone in. It was very frustrating. So i have to go with what motorola said, they should know right SInce they MADE THE PHONE!!!!

I've been using ATK since launch day on my DX and it has never given me a day of trouble with some of the bugs/freezes reported elsewhere. I do manage my exclusion list religiously, but I would literally use the ATK widget 20 times a day.

I did not and will not snag the 2.2 leak until its officially released by Moto. Its pretty clear that Froyo doesn't allow for any task killers so yesterday, I uninstalled ATK completely if only to break my habit before the 2.2 OTA. Instead, I added settings ---> manage apps to my dock on Prolauncher so I could easily kill off stock apps I don't use (City ID, etc.) Its definietely not as efficient as using ATK, but I'm getting used to it.

Meanwhile, and this might be a placebo effect, I swear my phone is running more quickly and with less screen to screen hesitation. My quadrant scores were always around 1220-1250 with ATK installed. I've run it several times since the ATK uninstall and am now consistently pulling a 1310-1330. Batterly life seems unaffected thus far, but I am still killing off unused tasks one-by-one religiously.

Well, I dunno what the right answer is, but I know this:
I bought my Droid x on 7-15. Best phone I've ever had. I did NOT install a task killer on the advice of this forum..this thread in particular.
I've let the Droid OS control things.
My phone has progressively gotten slower until it's downright embarrassing to show someone. Just a few hours up and it'll have 10% Ram left. It can't function like that.
Yes, I have some apps running. But, judging from what I read about on here, it's nothing most people don't have. In fact, less than some.
But, I did install ATK yesterday and my phone runs so much smoother.
So, I'm gonna try this awhile and see how it works.
It now has 30 mg RAM left after a reboot.
Dunno,as much as I love the Droid os, it has a little to be desired as to controlling ram useage.
It's not rooted.
I don't believe you should have to root a phone to use it efficiently.

I agree with much of this, but again when the official Froyo update comes for the DX, ATK et al. won't work. Using the native app control has been very effective and not inconvenient.

How are you doing this?

On DX:

Menu button > Settings > Applications > Running Services. Now you can kill off processes one by one with no risk of problems with an auto-kill. This has far better control and you can actually see what your phone is running at any given time.

To make it more convenient, I placed a shortcut to "Running Services" on my Launcher Pro Plus Dock, but you could do the same by simply placing a shortcut on any screen. For a screen shortcut, Home screen tap/hold > Shortcuts > Settings > Running Services.

As a former Blackberry Storm 9530 owner my advice is install Advanced Task Killer with a good ignore list and frequency setting of every 30 minutes. With that alone I went from half a day battery life to a full day. 10-12 hours before hitting 20%. Prior to that my phone was dead around lunch time.

I upgraded to 2.2 Froyo and it was a good move for me. The phone runs smoother and quicker for me since the upgrade.

The big problem with Droid is the bloat-ware. At least on my Blackberry I could delete all the bundled BS. Unless you root your Droid, you must live with all these BS apps firing up on their own and chipping away at your battery life. Once I become more savvy with the phone, I think Ill be rooting and cleaning house just like I did with my Storm.

If you are a former BB owner, like myself, who tinkered with Beta OS builds my advice is to check out ATK. You will get more battery life, guaranteed. There is no downside to loading it because you can always delete the thing if you feel the need.

Ok, so I'm on my first day with my X and I don't wanna install a task killer if I don't need to. If I just want to kill some of these things manually using the running services shortcut, which ones can I kill?

Danny,

any of the Social apps you don't use, get rid of them. There are a bunch of apps that fire up ALL the time, some of them bloatware that you can't remove without rooting the phone.

At least with ATK, you can kill all the apps with one touch. Most fire back up shortly thereafter, but if you set the ATK to kill apps every 30 minutes it will increase the life of your battery. I put SMS, email, and a couple of other necessary apps on the ignore list. Otherwise, everything else gets killed.

Try it out. It won't harm your phone. If you don't like it, you can manually uninstall it from your phone in the settings menu. Its very easy.

Wow! I am sooo confused after listening to both schools of thought. I installed ATK on day 1 on advice from two friends, who were told by Vzw reps to put the ATK app on their Xs. I just uninstalled it to see how it would run without it for a while.
I just know, being a former BB owner for years, that closing out all apps was a must for the phone's battery life and smooth operation. Now, with the Android OS, I'm puzzled. Let the OS handle the apps or "kill" them?
I wish there was a clear cut answer.

BTW, is Vzw saving on data usage($$$) by telling everyone to use a task killing app on Android phones? Just a conspiracy theory.

Former BB user here too. I could care less about Vzw and data usage. But the ATK definitely increased the life of my battery.
Do let me know how things roll since you uninstalled it. I am curious.
