Pocket detection in ICS?

This is the first I've seen this comment:

3. Normal features - available in GB, found in normal "make sense" places, e.g. The animation option, which was in settings / display is now in settings / developer options - boy that made a lot of sense. And, they broke out animation into two distict categories. WTF - this is a consumer phone not a developer phone... There's more. No more in pocket detection... [My highlight.]

Is this correct?

I no longer see it in any of the Settings menus. Probably for the better--I had seen a bunch of complaints about in-pocket detection not working very well, and causing other glitches.

Never had a problem with my pocket detection..was it a Motorola thing or a GB thing?

Mine worked fine to. Maybe an app would be possible?

That was pretty much the only thing I missed about my blackberry.

have two RAZRs and in-pocket protection worked great on both phones with GB.

I upgraded mine and it is gone.
Didn't upgrade other RAZR from GB to ICS and in-pocket protection is just merrily humming along just fine.:)

Worked great for me and combined with the Auto End task feature they also took away from me, I had mine set up in such a way I could go about 7 hrs above 90%. ICS took away some of my favorite features which just sucks.

I've been searching for one with no luck. Tried a couple that looked promising but did not work. Hope someone finds something.

Its not included in ics. Either the decided that this feature wasn't worth eating their time on or it didn't work good enough. I know I never even now that option existed in gingerbread either.

i found it to be a battery drain, maybe that had something to do with it not working for me? i dont know. but i wont shed a tear for it...

Mind sharing which ones you tried? I've seen a couple on Google Play, but haven't tried any yet.

I can't remember which ones for sure. I saw so many and gave up after awhile. The ones that came close though were Proximity Controllers. Take a look at those. I ended up using a slide up gesture on my Go Launcher to put it to sleep. Not as convenient but gets the job done and saves the button for all these new reboots I have to do on ICS.

So I miss the pocket detection but I found an app that is pretty good. Called Pocket Sensor. Uses the proximity (?) sensor and is sometimes a little sensitive but overall gets the job done. There is a free/test version and paid version

apps that detect pocket "detection" will cause battery drain. wouldn't it be more simple to just hit the power button before putting the phone in your pocket?

Ya know? When an upgrade (?) takes away functionality that was in an earlier release, it just slays me. I don't really want to beat a dead horse, but..... do you really call that an "upgrade?"

I test software for a living and I never hear the end of the rants about how we shouldn't take away functions.

I, also, liked the pocket detection, didn't have any problems with it, and if I didn't want to use it I could turn it off. What was wrong with that??? Sure, I can hit the power button, but I do like certain things automated when they can be.

I would like to see it come back.

The pocket detection never worked like it was supposed to, that's why they removed it. Why keep a feature in that doesn't do what it's supposed to 70 percent of the time.

I agree totally. I have been having my phone pocket dial people daily. It is embarrassing when your phone pocket dials a VP of the company at midnight.

I wonder if maybe Motorola or Google had violated a patent with it and had to remove it.

It is possible. But adding a pin number or pattern to your lock screen would have prevented that from happening...

Why is it so hard to press the lock button before you put it in your pocket. I can't imagine the phone unlocking itself and dialing a number with the screen off.

Here is a situation where the lock isn't an easy option: Your phone is in your pocket, and you use a bluetooth earpiece. A call comes in and you answer with your headset. The phone is in your pocket, but is now unlocked with the call screen on. Two bad things can happen:
1) while moving around on the phone, your pocket hangs up on the caller because the "end call" button is lit and gets touched.
2) you end your call, but the phone stays awake for a short while displaying the caller screen with the "call" button lit. Then you redial the call in your pocket because you touched the call button inadvertently.

I'm not sure how the pocket sensors have worked in the past, but I know my S3 uses the camera to determine if the screen should turn off, i.e. if it senses a face, it stays on. Perhaps when a call comes in, the "eye" can look and if it sees nothing (dark pocket") it simply stays off unless the side button is pushed.

can someone comment of the viability of that or if you have another solution?
