The phones have a proximity sensor that will turn the screen off when it's up to your face during a call so you don't hit buttons with your face. It would also keep the screen off if it's in your pocket because it is dark enough.
I would think it's the same thing on the s3. I haven't heard of a phone using the actual camera to detect that stuff..
