What do u think about this? Sounds cool.

Notable feature I really like: Pocket detection. If you put the phone into your pocket, it automatically turns off the screen and locks. Motorola really put a lot of work into this phone??

Pocket detection? Hmm

Definitely sounds very intriguing. I haven't used a "holster" or whatever for a phone since I had a Razr, and even then I found it pretty annoying, since I seemed to constantly be knocking it out of the thing everytime I would sit down (always seemed to hit the arm of my office chair at work)... With the size of smartphones, I never understand how/why people try to carry them around in those things. Therefore, I'm always carrying my current phone in my pocket so this would be a nice feature. The stupid WinMo phone now I have is basically either a password lock after 10 sec (maybe adjustable up to several minutes) but that pretty well annoys me and the "normal" lock will only activate if you manually go in and select "lock" from the start screen. So needless to say, my phone screen is constantly getting turned on in my pocket (button gets bumped or a text or something comes in, which activates the screen) and then other sh!t gets "touched" and turned on and I have all kinds of crap going on with the phone all while it's just in my pocket.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to a new ANDROID phone!!! :D

Sounds just like the holster function i used to have on my BB Curve. Except for your pocket. It would be nice to have this on every phone.

My BB Storm 2 has this. Works great with my Otterbox Defender holster/case so I look forward to it with the bionic. I do plan on getting a Defender (since its not a slider like D3 which is why they didn't make a defender for it, I see OB making one for Bionic) when it gets released and will probably sport a cheapy case until then.

I'm pretty sure that is magnet based. Curious how they intend to do that without magnets in a 'pocket'. I guess it could be something similar to the little sensor on my OG Droid that blanks out the screen when its against my ear and lights back up when i remove it from my ear. Maybe its supposed to detect real darkness on more than one point on the phone which may consider that a pocket (i realize the consequences of this thought... when thinking about night time)

it is more than likely a IR emitter/sensor (range finder) than a light threshold detector for reason already stated. Possibly on multiple (front and back) points to further reduce false positives.

The BlackBerrys were definitely magnet based...I hope the Moto one works with light/dark.

Good call on the magnets Nova. I heard in another forum it works off of a second proximity sensor. Separate from the one that detects if the phone is up near your face. Could be wrong but it sounds logical.

Only thing I could think of is if it's in your hand, your hand's going to hit all those sensors lol. Maybe a combination of the Ambient Light Sensor and the IR Emitter/Sensor? However it works, I know I'll be trying it out lol.

More on Droid Bionic Battery Life, Pocket Detection Mode (Plus: New Render Shows Off Thickness)
I saw this, a little more info on the battery life. It mentions the pocket protection, everything you said too. I think the statement "Motorola really put a lot of work into this phone?" makes me happy...happy to hear at least one person is satisfied with the phone so far.
?30% left with 15h 50m 56s on battery.
48% Cell standby, 44% Phone idle, 6% Display, 3% Android OS.
The above is average usage: 2 5-minute video clips (speakers are pretty loud), browsing the net for about 1 hour, checking e-mails from time to time. WIFI off though. 4G all the time. Uploading/downloading a few 8mb files."
I like that too! That sounds about how I'd use the phone, although I will be using WiFi at home to offset my data plan lol.
