Podcast Apps Stopping Unintentionally

I have tried 2 different podcast apps on my G7 and have problems with them unintentionally stopping.
Seems to stop when I put the phone in my pocket or make some other unintentional action, even with the screen off.
I've tried to deliberately recreate this with button presses, screen swipes etc, but have not yet figured it out.

What am I doing wrong ? Is there some screen gesture or other feature I have not figured out ?

The apps worked fine on my previous Galaxy S5 (although that is now SO slow).

I have had the same problem with ESPN app. both live and podcasts. have no answer for why.

There's a proximity sensor near the top of the screen (to turn it off if you put the phone to your ear during a call, so you don't "cheek dial"). Experiment and see if moving your finger around the top of the screen causes a problem. (Many audio and video apps stop if they're not the app that's on top, and some apps use the proximity detector to blank the screen by overlaying it, and that might stop some apps.)
