Poetic Smart Cover case (similar to iPad style)

I received the defective one today. And yeah, it's defective. If I fold the case back, the tablet turns back off. Glad they caught it. I'll be looking for my replacement case.

I just got in the 'defective' unit which I'd been proactively warned by Poetic was sent before they could stop it in anticipation of sending a replacement, the defect purported to be an issue with the smart cover's magnet turning off the screen when folded back. Poetic has indicated a replacement will be sent shortly (at no charge) with the defective issue resolved, so it's possible that some of the measurements and observations may not apply fully to the final unit.

For comparison, by my measurements:

Nexus 7, naked:
7 12/16" x 4 11/16" x 7/16"

Nexus 7 in Poetic SlimLine case:
7 15/16" x 4 15/16" x 10/16"

The case adds 3 3/4 oz. to the weight of the device.

So the case adds a maximum of 1/4" to each dimension; This is about as compact as you can get while offering a reasonable degree of full body and screen protection.

One thing that I'd been uncertain of was whether there was any mechanism to hold the flap against the body, and there is, magnetically.

While I had been concerned about stability as a stand, those concerns are completely allayed. In landscape mode it is surprisingly solid (on a flat, level, non-moving surface). I also found that by folding the flap back but not creating the 'triangle,' a fairly stable lesser angle can be achieved making for easy typing.

In terms of quality of the case construction: It fits the Nexus very well, with cutouts lined up perfectly. The tablet snaps in very easily, but proved quite difficult to remove without placing some degree of stress on the tablet. If you expect to be taking the tablet out in and out of the case on a very regular basis, this might be cause for some concern; if not, nothing to worry about.

It's worth noting I did find one physical manufacturing flaw in my case: there is a very small separation in the plastic in one corner of the 'lid' of the case, which I would be concerned about growing over time if this case weren't already proactively scheduled for replacement. Hopefully this was just bad luck on my part, and not the sort of thing that will be commonly found on the final production cases. I've tried to capture this in the attached image; my apologies for the quality, as I only have my cellphone available as a camera. I have not bothered to take other pictures as ones in the above post cover it pretty well - it looks as advertised

In short...

Things I like:
  • Ultra compact case with body and screen protection while adding no more than 1/4" to any dimension
  • Perfectly fitted (body and cutouts) for N7
  • Proactive customer service
  • Very stable stand for movie watching
  • Smart lid works fine (I haven't been able to replicate the defect they said this initially shipped case would suffer) and stays securely closed

Things I don't like:
  • Feels like undue stress must be applied to tablet to remove it from case
  • perfectly fitted (body and cutouts) for N7
  • Cover flap cannot be folded back fully flush behind the unit, makes it awkward to hold in hand
  • Cosmetic flaw in my sample (separated corner, pic attached)

I just ordered this case except I chose the one by poetic....appears to be the same exact case only cheaper.

Amazon.com: Poetic HardBack Protective Case for the Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus (Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic): Computers & Accessories

Mine is out for delivery and should get it tomorrow. Wish I would have seen this one first, but I may still order it.

For those who preordered early and will received 2 cases it a win win situation if you decide to return it due to not folding flat which some of you are complaining about. You can return the non defective case back and purchase another like Amazon.com: Poetic HardBack Protective Case for the Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus (Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic): Computers & Accessories and still have two case and maybe some cash/credit back.

Argh - I thought this was going to be perfect, but it doesn't fold flat when open. Suck.

Any other suggestions for low-pro, clean, and folds flat? I really find it hard to believe that they didn't put a double hinge on this so that it folds flat.

I thought it would fold flat as well, that is disappointing to hear. Makes me unsure if I will keep the case myself, this one seemed perfect but it should fold flat as noted by others.

Is this one of the cases with the defective sleep wake magnet?

That one looks awesome, too. Unfortunately, they still don't show a pic of it folded all the way back... Any ideas, anybody?

Yeah, I received my "defective" case and it is defective. Even if you fold the case back 3/4 of the way it turns it off. Other than that, I was somewhat disappointed in the craftmanship. The bottom of the back shows some glue. Also. like others have stated, the cover does not fold flat back. I know my expectations were too high (expecting ipad smart case quaility) for a $20 case though.

I hope the fixed version looks better. If so, I will provide an update. At least Poetic is trying to manufacture a case with a slim form factor, while taking advantage of the smart features.

I ordered this one too and I just got it yesterday. For me it works flawlessly. It is a little thicker than I expected but the craftsmanship seems very good and the magnetic wake/sleep function works perfectly. It fits very sung and feels like it will offer really good protection for the N7.

I actually have had basically the exact same case on my Galaxy Tab for at least 6 months and it has been fantactic. That is why when I saw the same style case for the Nexus I didn't hesitate to pick one up. The one for the galaxy tab was a little thinner and doesn't have the had strap or random bungie cord but is otherwise basically the exact same.

If you look closely at the image, it appears to have the same points of articulation, so I doubt it will fold back flat. It's a shame, really, as this form factor of case had a tremendous amount of promise. This failure, which should be fairly easily correctable without sacrificing structural integrity or dramatically increasing cost from a design/manufacturing aspect, is the only really large setback. I'd gladly have spent a few dollars more for the same case without this shortcoming.

i tried to return mine but they said i could keep it and that they are sending a new one instead. apparently the first batch was defective (magnet issue)
