Poked the wrong hole but what microphone is that?

So after 32 hours of travel from Africa, I got back and needed to switch my SIM card from my Pixel 2 to another phone. I jammed the SIM tool into the hole at the top of the phone before realizing that's not the right hole.

I have already searched and it turns out other people have done it. I have confirmed what I thought, that it is a microphone.

But which microphone is it? What is it for? Is it just used all the time?

I would like to see if I broke something but don't know exactly what to look out for.

The microphone is used for noise cancelling. The phone uses it to listen to the external environment (not including your voice), so that it can filter that out from the sounds it hears using the main microphone. That way, it can reduce the amount of noise that comes with your voice, and make your call more audible to the other party.

So the way to test it is to go to a noisy environment and make a call?

I'll probably never know.

I'm sure it's fine. I've done it twice now and no one has ever complained about my call quality.

I have to ask - both times because you thought it was the SIM tray? That's kind of funny. (hope you can laugh at yourself a bit)

Yep :P. Just not paying attention and trying to pop the SIM and then going ... "OH ****" and realizing that was the MIC.
