Have a look at the attached pic. I took this sunset pic but it certainly didn't come out very nice. Too bright and why is there a line shooting out from the sun?

That is the sun reflecting off the lens. It's not the cameras fault. :)

Here's mine. I had to underexpose it so I wouldn't get the same result you did.

Oooh something to test tonight! Hopefully the canadian wildfire smoke clears out enough for me to see the sunset...

The problem was the lens and the reflection, not the camera OR the focus.. you can play with the screen as soon as you have any light and dark area touching around the screen

I'm currently sitting at work in North Vancouver trying to see the mountains through the smoke haze.

The original picture was too bright probably because Auto HDR was on. Majority of the picture was in the shade so the camera app thinks you want to see the detail there. You are probably better off turning off HDR or adjust in Manual mode. As for the line, I think that was reflection (lens flare?) off the glass in front of the lens or if you have one of those transparent back case.

I believe the line is a phenomenon relative to the image sensor itself. Sorry, i don't remember what it's called, but I don't think that sharply defined line is an optics problem. Or necessarily an exposure settings problem.

@chamomiami....that's quite some cloud formation in the second shot from last. Lenticular clouds, are they? Never seen anything like them in the UK at any rate.

It was the first time I saw something like that, after a normal rain

In your first picture you'll notice all of the street lights are blurry. One of my pet peeves with a lot of smartphone cameras is low light shots, hardly anyone seems to get them right.
