poor quality indoor photographs with flash

Most phone cameras have very poor flashes which do not illuminate enough area. My S4 mini seems to have the opposite problem. If I take a portrait picture indoors with flash on Auto, the faces are invariably whited out, i.e. too much flash. This happens when the people being photographed are a fair distance away (6 - 10 ft) and not just when they are up close. Does anyone else suffer from this, and is there an easy solution? Cheers.

Welcome to Android Central! If the camera app has a manual exposure setting, try dialing it down. Otherwise, you could try putting some Scotch tape over the flash--it might dim or diffuse the flash enough to make the photos look better.
