Poor sound quality Bluetooth Audio Honor 9 Lite

Just picked up this phone and while I love everything else about it the audio quality over Bluetooth is awful.

Very compressed with breaking up of high end sounds, like a rubbish MP3 from dial up days.

I had a P10 lite for a while and that was similar.

I read quite a few threads about Android having poor audio quality over Bluetooth with Oreo (and Nougat) for many different platforms.

Really annoying as I have a very old original Moto E with cyanogenmod rom on it and it sounds superb with the same headset and in my car.

Anyone else experiencing this?

My 9lite won't connect to my LG Soundbar for some reason. Other devices will but not this. Wife has a 9lite too and same scenario.
Connects to my car Bluetooth fine.
