Poor wifi performance

Noted back cover gap after reading your post, wifi was fair (2 bars), 5 MBs.
After squeezing top left corner of back and getting a satisfying "click" strength went to excellent, and 54 MBs.

The scale for wifi strength is different on you phone, laptop and N7. There is no standard to see how many bars one device gets vs another.

Thanks Comdatcom. This was exactly my issue - snapped the cover back in place and my n7 wifi is working as well as it used to. I mentioned it to my wife who said, "oh i forgot, i dropped it earlier." You saved me a lot of time and frustration I think! Thanks again.

this is not good at all.
this defect would drive me nuts. I was right on the verge of buying one..... not now. my thinkpad has huge 'ears'.. it will pickup when nothing else will. actually my pitifully cheap Optimus p509 has excellent wifi reception as well.. better than my wife's Galaxy S4G

My Nexus 7 also has really poor WiFi performance. It has gotten to the point where I don't even bother trying to use it anymore. It works well if I'm in the same room as my router. But my desktop is that room as well, so I might as well just use that. I've barely had it a day, and already it's become nothing more than a paper weight.

Aside from this thread, I haven't been able to find many owners complaining about WiFi performance. So we might just have defective units. I think I'm gonna call customer service to see if I can get a replacement.

My wifi is stronger than my laptop. Just because a few are having problems doesn't mean all Nexus 7's are that way.

I was hesitant to pop the back off my N7 but the signal had dropped to almost nothing except in the room with the router. Popping off the the back was super easy. I found and bent up slightly the antenna "fingers" on the body (not the cover) popped the cover back on (the whole operation took under a minute), and saw the signal was - - - way--- better! So glad I tried this.

When I got my Nexus 7 I had pretty good reception where I needed it. The past couple of days my WiFi reception dropped to poor or non-existent just a half a stairway up. I searched the forum here and found this thread. I took my Nexus 7 out of its cover and looked closely and found a very slight gap between the tablet and cover. I had to look very close to see the gap since it was so small. I snapped the cover back into place and checked that it was secure all around and had my WiFi reception back. I didn't even need to take the cover off.

Thank you. Taking the back off and reseating it did the track. Went from barely one bar to a solid three bars.

After I read the forum re loose cover, I checked mine and sure enough it was slightly open and I gently popped it close and it worked - thanks!!!

In addition to closing the cover tightly, I found one obvious improvement to my Wi-Fi reception. My router was on the floor on the lower level of our house. I raised it to the top of a cabinet about 4 feet higher and was amazed at the better reception throughout our house.

I also had horrible wifi strength on my Nexus 7 so I took off the back and adjusted the wifi connection slightly and it did improve my constantly dropping wifi connection. It isn't as strong as my iPad but it is slightly better than it was. Don't know if more adjustment would help more but It is almost useable now.

Worked for me too, after I realized that those two tiny metal strips was the antenna. I carefully pried them up.

I tried this, but was afraid to push too much. I didn't get any relief. How much can you safely bend?

Could get an app like WiFi Analyzer and get a better measure of signal strength as seen on your N7. Then when moving about you can determine best location of device or maybe effect of change of router position. Can also see if there are interfering signals.

Based on the earlier comments, I had the same problem, took my nexus out the case and lo and behold, the frame wasn't together fully. Popped back together, signal went right back up. Huzzah! And thank you!

Nexus 7 2013. Poor wifi signal. In the room where my laptop shows 2 bars, the Nexus gets no signal. Surely this issue should have been resolved by now!!!

This was my issue. Popped the back into place and went from "Poor" to "Excellent" signal strength.
