POP/IMAP Push notifications?

My brother got his Atrix 2 and wants to know if it is possible to have push notifications on a POP/IMAP non-exchange account without using an external application? His A2 has gingerbread and he wants to know if it has a NATIVE email client that allows push on a POP/IMAP account. We searched the net and the answer seems to be NO, but he wants to verify from those in the know. He is new to Android and I am trying to help him.
