OK, Ive searched around and cant find it.

Just picked up a Shift and for whatever reason when the phone is rotated from portrait to landscape the main screens wont rotate unless I open the keyboard, is anyone else having this problem or am I just an idiot and they arent supposed to ?

That's likely by design, my Incredible which is just about the same phone in terms of 2.2/Sense doesn't autorotate on it's side. I actually like that the shift doesn't do it unless the keyboards out.

Make sure auto-rotate is enabled in settings:

Home > Menu key > Settings > Display > Auto-rotate screen

It rotates in the obvious apps like Messaging. If yours doesn't rotate, then Auto-rotate might be turned off.

Yeah auto rotation works fine in programs, I assumed he was talking about the home screen (sense).

I think you're right, now that I read the phrase "main screens" again. My guess is they locked it to portrait mode for performance reasons.

yeah the Home screen is locked to portrait when the slider is closed. It is just a little annoying.

I think they locked it because of the phone app when the phone is in landscape you can't open the 10 key.

I bought my shift on Friday and it was able to go from portrait to landscape WITHOUT the keyboard being opened and it just stopped working out of no where

Had mine since the 11th. Last night I installed some apps, display lagged, screen locked the wrong way and I then uninstalled those apps and did a powerdown. It was after that I noticed home screens and the "All Apps" menu stayed portrait until I opened the slider. I could have sworn the home screens could go landscape with the slider in...

Haven't been able to find any documentation that confirms or denies if Home screen orientation does landscape with the slider in...

I am having the same problem when it comes to the homescreens, when on either of the five main ones the screen wont rotate unless keyboard is extended. I am thinking that the people that have had success with the keyboard closed might have their keyboard opened a slight bit without noticing it...

Thats one thing that i can honestly say i liked more on the Epics touchwiz setup compared to the shifts sense. Touchwiz let you rotate its view without the keyboard extended out.

I'm with devortex:
My phone is a week old and the home screens rotated without the keyboard extended. While working with the phone last night, my home screens stopped rotating (unless I slide the keyboard out).
The trigger that changes orientation P-L happens in the middle of the second row of keys, not if the slide is barely open.
The trigger back (L-P) happens right as the slide completes it's close.
Menu>Settings behaves the same way as the home screens do.
If I'm holding the phone landscape, as soon as I open an app the orientation switches, and as soon as I go back to the home screen it flips back.
I've unchecked and rechecked the auto-rotate option a few times, no effect.
All this is to say is that I've spent some time researching it and would like to know if it's a glitch or an update. I feel like I would have confirmed an update of some sort, so it feels like a glitch.

Mine doesn't switch and never has with the keyboard closed. I specifically checked the day I got it because some people who have EVO's were wondering.

The screen definitely rotates without the keyboard out, homescreen and all. Make sure the option is checked in the settings. Menu>settings>display>Auto-rotate display.

I cannot get my home HTC Sense screen(s) to shift from portrait to landscape unless my keyboard is open. It seems built into the programing. I have downloaded Launcher Pro Plus. Through this app my home screens do switch from portrait to landscape regardless of keyboard. This is GREAT!

A few draw backs are it seems to have a lag in response time and I feel limited with the available widgets and icons. For example: I am a BIG Google Voice (GV) user. Through HTC Sense I can use the GV icon. Through Launcher Pro Plus the only icon they have is an interactive one that displays the most recent voicemail. It allows you to scroll to the left for older voicemails. I cannot get it to scroll to the right to back to more recent voicemails. Not too mention I don't like have them displayed for anyone to see.

If anyone knows how to get the HTC Sense screens to shift from portrait to landscape with the keyboard close, I would LOVE to know.

Thanks!!
