Post Review Slams EVO4G, Compares INC

I have both devices. The downsides of the EVO vs. the Incredible IMHO:

* Resolution makes the screen look less crisp & thing look stretched compared to the Incredible.
* Speed - the Incredible is much faster due to it's processor not being underclocked.
* Size - there's a tradeoff here: the big screen is nice to look at and obviously provides a great amount of real estate for web pages and other apps, but the Incredible is a lot more pocket and hand friendly. The EVO is just huge, but that's one of it's "features". It looks a little silly walking in public texting on this thing. I feel like people are staring at me haha.
* The Incredible has a built in 8GB storage card in addition to the SD card slot.
* The WiFi radio doesn't pick up a very good signal compared to the Incredible. They probably underpowered it to save on battery life.

...

The size is the reason I decided to not buy the EVO. I literally walked into both stores, and played with each. I've held off buying an Incredible just to play with the EVO. The phone is huge. I could hold it comfortably, but not pocket it. And, as you mention, you feel silly walking around with it. It attracts attention.

So how does the Incredible stack up against the Droid Xtreme (Shadow)? Any of the same issues as the EVO4?

Since the Extreme/Shadow hasn't been formally released, I'm not sure the real specifications have either. But I'll be interested in checking it out when they are.

Bottom line: if you have an Incredible, don't feel bad that you don't have an EVO. If you have an EVO you should be ecstatic as well. They are both great, but I do wish they hadn't underclocked it. I can see why they did though. Remember how much complaining us Incredible owners did when we realized battery life was subpar? One of the few choices HTC had was to underclock the EVO if they wanted to avoid a similar protests.

I hadn't heard it was under-clocked... interesting.

Anyway, yeah they under-clocked the Moto Droid as well for battery life purposes.

What are your sources that say the EVO is underclocked? I thought it was the Incredible that was down clocked to 768Mhz?

That was an early rumor but turned out to be not true. That was actually one of the reasons a lot of people were holding out for the VZW Nexus for so long, the misconception that it was underclocked. As for the Evo I was surprised to read this too.

I'm glad I didn't get the evo. I checked it out at sprint yesterday and noticed lots of lag. It is far from incredible. I just hope Verizon gets something with a screen that size. only thing I really liked about it.

Did you reboot the phone? You have to do that with store models to get a real sense of that since they are played with all day long.

Actually I was going off of what another Android user had told me, but I just downloaded the Device Information App in the Market and both the EVO and the Incredible are running at 998 MhZ according to that program. So I apologize for my first post above.

The order goes read, think, reply.

No one reads 3 pages of post to a thread before going back and then responding. Obviously I hadn't read his clarification before responding to the first two. Don't be a jerk about it.

It's really difficult to read 3 pages? I wasn't being a jerk merely pointing out etiquette. And I read 3 pages before responding, I always read the entire thread so I know what's going on, shy of it being a 20 or 30+ page thread, I mean honestly it only take 2 minutes.

Also while you are reading there is a "Multi-Q" button. So when you run across things you want to reply to is saves them for you. Imagine that. Then when you finish reading the thread, you hit "Post Reply" and all the quotes are there for you to go "Oh yeah I wanted to respond to that" and make a statement.

Read,think,reply.

Thanks to you I know what the Multi-Q button now does. I was hitting it before and nothing was happening so I was confused. Thanks

Here's a size comparison. I don't think the pictures do either justice in regards to their respective sizes.

To me the extra size/weight makes the EVO far less interesting.

Hit multi-q for each one you want and then hit quote on the last one you are responding to - then they will all load.

When you hit the quote button it just loads the post reply page. Both accomplish the same thing. Glad I could help!

I have both and Cory does make good points. I'll add a few of my own:

Big & heavy. I am just not getting used to it. Feels more like a mini-tablet rather than a big phone. It pulls down my pants/shorts while in my left pocket - have to tighten my belt!

Video - I actually like the Inc's video better. That HD crap really does nothing and since the EVO is bigger, it is not as steady and thus your videos are shaky. The Inc's looks richer in color - just the opposite of what I saw on YouTube.

Cameras are OK on each - there are color saturation differences as Cory posted - but honestly, I still like the iPhone's camera better at this time.

Screens - EVO is brighter but a little washed out. But you don't really notice it until you place it beside the Inc. And then the Inc looks better of course.

I can actually type BETTER on the Inc. I do most of my typing in landscape (coming from an iPhone - portrait was tough to do for me) and the EVO is too big - have to reach too far with the right thumb just like I had to on the Droid's slide out kb.

And the kicker so far after two days - I have been running actual browser tests by launching the same sites at the same time on both (testing 3G vs 4G, etc). Funny thing I noticed - when you zoom on text - say a news article in the NYT - both screens zoom about the same AND about the same amount of text and the similar text sizes are shown on each screen. The EVO will sometimes show a few extra lines or the start of a new paragraph, but I guess I expected a bigger difference. You really do not lose than much, at least IMO.

I got the EVO because I really wanted to test call quality. The only think I don't like about the Inc is the loss of syllables that happens to the caller sometimes in the ear-piece (for me, if someone talks fast or pauses a lot, then the conversation seems "broken", not completely clear). So far, the EVO sounds better through the ear-piece on the EVO is a little low. I think the Inc has dual mics (right?) for noise cancellation which can cause problems to call quality. The Inc can get better with software fixes (again, I believe).

So I am traveling next week with both (and my iPhone) to see how they do on the road. But if I had to decide today = Inc.

was the review from another iphone fan boy? They don't seem to like anything that shows Apple and their trendy device is losing its luster...

I had both phones myself and cory is dead on.my inc opened 5 web pages before the evo loaded 1 so I thought it was the Sprint 3g I didn't know the evo was underclocked.also I thought the hd video wasn't that good the phone was big and bulky in my small hands lol I love my inc and will not leave vz I am looking forward to the scorpion I will look at that next hope it will have sence.

Nope. He raved about the INC a day before release which influenced me a bit. The underlying point of his EGO review was that it was no better than the INC, in some ways inferior and you have put up with Sprint which for some is a deal breaker.

Both are high end Android phones running on 2.1 with Sense UI. The only real differences between the two are the bigger screen on the EVO and Sprint's 4G network.

But in all honesty, I think the EVO was designed much better than the Incredible. Take a look at the EVO's flat back compared to the Incredible's rugged back. WTF was HTC thinking?
