Power Issues

I can go to bed with my phone at say like 75% and this morning it was near dead again. Ran into the same thing yesterday but had to charge it up for a while to to get to do a back up and restore and that seemed to work for the night. Did the things where you hold down the volume buttons then power and volume down etc. This phone was new when I bought it not even 6 months ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tom

Did you buy it directly from Samsung or a carrier, or was it from a 3rd party retailer/reseller? It's unlikely that a 4 year old phone would've been mint-condition brand new 6 months ago -- resellers can repackage a used or refurbished phone to look like new, and when you get a used phone, it's hard to know how healthy the battery is until you start using it.

It would help to see some battery stats. Charge up to 100%, then let it drain to 20-30% with normal usage, without charging in between. Then show us:

1. The main Settings>Battery screen.
2. The fullscreen battery graph screen (which may show Awake time and Cell Signal Strength).
3. The Screen category (to see total Screen On time).
4. The Cell Standby category, if present (to see Time Without Signal).

You might have to install a 3rd party battery monitor, like GSam Battery Monitor, to get the Cell Signal Strength graph.

Mine doesnt show a graph. It was from a guy is or was part owner of an AT&T store. What graph do you reccomend?

Install GSam Battery Monitor from the Play Store, which will give you more detailed information anyway.

OK will give it a try and see what it does. It`s wierd that it nearly completely drained while sitting on a Qi charging pad last night. Put it on it just before bed last night and the battery was almost full then close to dead in the morning but my brothers S8+ charged up just fine sitting right next to it.

My suspicion is that the battery is fairly old and deteriorated (likely from a previous owner's usage pattern). Accubattery can also give you an idea of the battery health -- if the battery health is <85%, that usually means the battery needs to be replaced.

But other possibilities include some rogue 3rd party app that's inappropriately using too much battery -- you can figure this out by booting into Safe Mode and seeing if the problem persists. Or if the cell reception is poor, that's another cause of battery drain.

It`s always charged up to 100% in a short time and still does it just randomly dies like a little bit ago while playing a word game. Had to hold power and volume down button to get it back on but this time the battery was still near full.

Let you battery drop to 0% and die. Then charge to 100% without using it. Let it charge while phone is off. Hope it helps

After my phone died with battery saying it was at 83% I put it on the wireless charging pad with no result it did nothing then I plugged it in to a wall charger and started charging then I took it off the charger and turning it on by holding volume down and the power button it turned on and says the battery is at 93% It has recently done this with the battery at 100%. Looking around locally for a battery replacement store but no luck tis late in the day.

That`s what I`m leaning towards. We got a number of places locally to go to like Batteries & Bulbs or something like that then a few locally owned stores. Funny thing is I listened to some music las night for over an hour and then it just suddenly died. I read one way to rule out or confirm it`s the battery is try it plugged in and see if it does the same thing.

Modern phones won't be able to draw power from a wall outlet if the battery is bad, so I don't think that would help.

If a phone suddenly shuts off when the battery level is still relatively high, that's a common sign of a failing battery.
