for last few months my verizon galaxy S3 has been running the battery down faster than it was previously. replaced the 2100 battery with a new 4200 one with no joy. is there any way to ameliorate this or is it just a sign the S3 is beginning to fail? it is close to 6 years old. turning off locate is not an option and didn't seem to help anyway.

As old as that phone is, any "new" battery is going to be old stock that had already significantly deteriorated. I highly doubt you'll find a recently manufactured battery.

Your only real option is going to be buying a current model phone. Not only to get a fresh battery, but I'm sure you're seeing performance issues as well. You're also not getting any security updates. Unfortunately all the flagship phones are now sealed batteries. So when those batteries go bad, you'll have to take it to a service center and pay to have it replaced.
