EVO 4G breaks Sprint sales record - SlashGear

This claims Pre sold about 60K first weekend. If Instinct sold 20K, that would be 80K * 3 = 240K.

I'd guess Sprint ordered 250K-300K units from HTC and nearly all sold. They should have ordered 500K as they'd eventually sell them. Still significant that EVO outsold first Droid with little advertising. VZW really raised the awareness of the Android platform and Sprint is benefiting from it.

FBR says, "David Dixon, FBR's Telecom analyst, estimates unit sales on Day 1 as follows: 120K sales in Sprint direct stores; 120K sales at RadioShack and 80K sales at Best Buy. We point out that RSH stores, on this basis, generated just as many unit sales as Sprint direct stores; RSH also generated 50% more unit sales of the device than its direct competitor, Best Buy (across more RSH stores in operation)... We estimate that this would all-else-equal translate alone into $0.04 to $0.05 per share in annualized EPS for RSH.

Guess all them radioshacks really do add up

Well if their estimates are to be believed, I'm shocked. That's more than I expected.

Still nowhere near the absolutely ridiculous 1 million+ some of you were throwing around though. :p

BTW, that 320K estimate is just for Day 1, not the weekend.

Remember that most places did not have any phones to sell past the first day. I know my local Sprint store got some more, but I know not all Sprint stores did. Likewise BB and RS did not either.

i don't know why ppl keep saying sprint didn't properly advertise the phone. what are you guys basing your statements on? no 24/7 commercials on the cooking channel? i mean cmon just about every tech website I visit, I see a damn ad for either the 4g hotspot or the evo. if you think sprint should have advertised more on tv, then at least just say that... don't say they completely screwed up the launch because of no advertising. i'm not a marketing genius or anything but it seems logical to me that return on investment will be a lot higher if you target the specific demographic that is most likely to purchase the phone. in this case, sprint advertised directly to people like you and me and i think the results speak for themselves.

One thing for sure, HTC didn't make enough. If they made 500K+, they might have been able to sell on first weekend.

I can just imagine how many more units they would have sold had they properly advertised the phone..

Considering that EVERY Best Buy, Radio Shack and most Sprint stores were absolutely sold out around me, it wouldn't have helped one iota. That's actually probably a good thing that they didn't advertise more. Let the pre-orders and early-adopters get their fix, and then as the sales channels get more in, and the positive feedback starts to send more their way, the fewest people possible are turned away.

if they had enough phones and ran out in a day or so... and remembering that i worked for a sprint store at one time at an anticipated 100-200 phones a store of the most frequent a or b stores, then my guess would be 750k to 1million. radioshack maybe 50 phones or so per store.

22,000 stores*50 per store=1.1 million range liberal
22,000 stores*25 per store=550k million range conservative

based on HTC EVOTM 4G Breaks Sales Records for Sprint on Launch Day; America's First 4G Phone is a Hit with Customers

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Jun 07, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Friday, June 4, was an early morning for thousands of customers who lined up several hours before Sprint (NYSE: S) stores opened their doors in anticipation of the first day of sales for America's first 3G/4G phone, HTC EVOTM 4G. Customers were anxious to get their hands on HTC EVO 4G providing record sales figures for Sprint stores around the country.

Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint - the record was previously held by both Samsung InstinctTM and Palm PreTM. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"HTC EVO 4G is a clear winner for customers with the powerful combination of an amazing multimedia experience in 3G coverage areas that becomes even better in our growing number of 4G markets. It is terrific to see customers react so positively to this device and the innovative experience it brings to them," said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO.

The record pace of HTC EVO 4G sales led to temporary shortages of the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers. Sprint and HTC are diligently working around the clock to increase inventory in all sales channels. Additional shipments are arriving in retail stores on a regular basis with many stores seeing daily deliveries.

"HTC EVO 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year," said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president - Product Development for Sprint. "We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get EVO 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible."

EVO sold 320K according to analysts on DAY 1.
Original iPhone sold 250K in first 2-3 days
Moto Droid sold 100K first 3 days, 250K first week
Droid Incredible sold 100K in first 2 days

EVO possibly outsold iPhone1, Moto Droid and Droid Inc combined on first day.

Sprint needs to put that word out if the EVO estimates are on target. So should Android Central.

Probably not much more than that. If they sold 320K first day, they probably had around 350K stocked for weekend.

BTW, some bearish analysts say Sprint only sold 200K first weekend. Bullish ones say 320K first day.

For 22,000 stores selling it, that would be less than 10 units avg per store, which doesn't sound right. Even 320K sounds low. Just depends on how many they manufactured for first weekend. If they could've had 500K made, they probably would have sold them first weekend.

I was at my local Sprint store last night and talked to the store manager. I asked if he had any EVOs and he said no. He said they have received a shipment everyday since launch and sell out of them the same day. I didn't ask how many but they had a pretty good stock of them on launch day last Friday when I got mine.

So sales, at least at this store, are still strong. And he showed me a waiting list of about 10-15 people.
