I never use 5G around here because it's so sparse and spotty (not to mention huge battery drain searching for it) so I'm glad mine's stuck on LTE but it would certainly suck if you need to use 5G and can't change it.

I changed it for the same reason. But now if 5G improves, or UWB actually becomes a thing, we can't switch to it...

Google allowed network carriers to determine if these settings are visible or not not too long ago. If you use the Verizon network we can no longer get to those settings.

I wonder if Verizon gets enough complaints, maybe they'll add the setting back.
There is a thread about it on the Verizon forum, I posted there also, and so far no one from Verizon has even answered. So my guess is two things: 1) the support reps that we chat with on the phone and live support & website support don't know that the option is even missing. 2) The higher level people at Verizon that made the decision to hide those settings don't care how much we complain.

There is a way to change if from the phone app, some advanced menu you can access by dialing a specific code. I think it was mentioned on the Verizon forum. I'll see if I can find the info.

AT&T does the same thing. In fact, they've been hiding that menu option on other phones like Samsung and even BlackBerry (when they carried them) for years.

At least there's an app in the Play Store to unhide that settings page for Samsung phones. No such luck for Pixels best I can tell.

And AT&T's own support people who will occasionally respond to posts about that question on their support forum as if the option is there. Then we regular folks have to follow up with "no, AT&T phones don't work like that".

Apparently if you dial *#*#4636#*#* from the phone app you can change the preferred network type there. The options for LTE and 5G are not listed that way, but one of the network options correlates to LTE and another correlates to 5G.

Yeah that interface is a little scary.

If I remember correctly, vzw took away this option a few months ago. I don't believe there was a post on this forum, but I noticed it and someone started a similar thread on the pixel 7 forum. Sad to see the power carriers have...

Thank you so much for posting this! I played around a bit - the interface isn't as bad as I thought. I got my 5G back, and know how to go back to LTE. Very much appreciated!
