Preparing for gingerbread?

No, it's not that simple. This article is outdated. When it was written we thought we could get the official update if we were on the leaked gingerbread .595. Now we know that we have to be on the official stock Froyo to be able to get the update. You will have to sbf back to stock froyo.

Can't find a link that shows how to sbf back to stock.

that link says from gingerbread. the current liberty rom does not have gingebread currently. Will that links instructions work for me?

cant we just wait until someone posts the new GB file here, download it to pc then place on SD card and flash it?

The instructions in that link are to get you back to 2.2.1 back from ANYTHING. It is always good to keep a copy of the most recent SBF if you are into hacking/ROMs because it will get you back to "out of the box" condition if you happen to mess everything up. That's the most recent SBF(2.2.1). There will be a Gingerbread SBF eventually.

So this way, we won't have to un-root?

You never have to unroot to get an update, but you do have to be back at the stock configuration to get an OTA. You can update manually by booting into recovery & flashing the update.zip, but if you run into issues with it taking, you may have to flash the SBF so the instructions & files from this link are still good to have just in case.

I see. So I'm guessing the easiest thing to do will be to go back to stock and wait for someone to show us how to root the new gingerbread?

as of the last word it will be difficult to root. dont know why any one would take the update. ive been gb for a month or so it is perfect and i have no issues.

That depends on what you want to do. If you like the ROM you are on now, you could also just stay there because there are a lot of ROMs that are better than the official release is. There will be new ROMs soon after this release using this kernel.

If I had to put money on where the first easy root method is going to come from, it would be here:
[26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

Myself, I am perfectly happy with my configuration right now & plan to not take the update until I know I can be rooted, have Netflix, & use Wireless Tether. If I can't get all 3 of these things on our Gingerbread build, I will stay on Froyo permanently. Here is my post on another thread about it:

I'm on the .588 rooted GB and at first it was okay, but God damn, it seems to have been degrading badly over the last 4 weeks or something. I mean, while inputing text my damn keyboard freezes then disappears and when I bring it back to continue texting it doesn't show any of my letters. Sometimes when trying to dial by using quick contact shortcut or visual voicemail it will immediately say call ended and the only way I can make calls again is from a battery pull. I mean, this is getting worse and worse with more little bugs popping up day by day, at this point I am dying to go back to Froyo and then I'll just get the OTA hoping those issues have been fixed.

Well ****, now I need to figure out how to root my phone after this update. I was using the 1 click root option from Z4root. Not that I'm not worried about it because I've jailbroken many iphones before. Guess I'll need to find a guide or a new buddy to show me how on the forums :) Any takers lol?

As the poster above stated, Gingerbreak is an app similar to z4root, but it roots Gingerbread.

He even posted a link for it.

I SBF'd back to froyo after receiving the Moto test group thing but have sseen nothing. So if this hits by Friday I will use Gingerbreak for root and be done.

Its not hard. Download RSDLite 4.8, google "droidx drivers" and get them from the Motorola site. Then google ".340 full sbf for droidx". Once you have all that downloaded, reboot the phone holding down both volume keys if you're running gingerbread or the down volume and the camera button if you're on froyo. This will boot you into the phone's bootloader. Now connect to the computer and allow windows to install the drivers. Now open RSDLite and click the "..." button and browse for the sbf file. Now make sure the program recognizes your device, if it does you'll see it in the white area. Now press start, kick back and relax. Somtimes it will not boot up all the way afterwards. In this case pull the battery and reboot while holding the home button and select wipe all data. (Scroll with volume keys, select with camera keys) now when the phone reboots you'll be back to out of the box froyo.

Just so everyone is clear, Gingerbreak will work on the "leaked" versions of Gingerbread. The exploit used by "Gingerbreak" has been patched for the official OTA version.
