Presidential Text Messages?

What do you guys think of this new system being proposed that will allow "emergency" text messages to be sent to your phone, whether you like it or not? It looks like the major carriers are on board and all cell phones will be "required" to have these new chips installed by next year. We will be able to opt out of all but the "presidential" messages.

I for one hope the community develops a way to disable this nonsense. What say you Fascinate friends?

Here is A Link To The Story.

I hope they are "free" texts. I personally will opt out.

I would imagine that we wont be charged for these text messages, but you will only have the ability to opt out of most of the messages. You WILL NOT have the option to opt of of the presidential alert messages. Those will go through like it or not!

This is just an extension of the Emergency Alert System (or EAS) that all radio stations must have installed. It's a way to forward weather alerts and other emergency messages to people. Not really a bad idea to have. These days fewer people have the radio or TV on so your phone seems to be the next best way to reach you. The messages are supposed to be localized so if a tornado is tearing through your town they will tell you.

Under these conditions, I have no issues with it. Nowadays I am either more in front of the computer than the tv, or watching something that is DVR'd so I would miss all the announcements.

If they plan on just sending "a special message from your congressman" then yeah, it is akin to spam and I don't want it. I also cannot see a Presidential message short of a 9/11, WWIII or "FEMA is on the way" being anything other than SPAM.

As long as the messages are sent only when it's a real emergency, I don't have a problem with it.

As long as it just for emergencies I think it's good. Just a couple of weeks ago I signed up for text alerts from the weather channel because we had a tornado warning and I had no idea because I didn't have the TV on to see an announcement. I wondered how I was to know about the tornado in that situation, which is why I wanted the text alert. So as long as the proposed text system works that way (emergencies only) I think it's a good idea.

As long as its an "emergency only" text and not spam, I have no problem with it. I'm always on the go and am never without my phone. Might come in handy if something "bad" was coming.

Emergency only and I'm fine with it. The county I live in has a similar system that I'm subscribed to. They'll send out a text or email or both (whatever you choose) when something happens. They are usually very appropriate. Usually related to weather conditions or bad highway accidents. I think having them for these sorts of things is fine and helpful. If there is a tornado coming and I don't have my TV or radio on I'd like someone to tell me. Similarly, I would also like to know if we are being invaded by zombies.

Nothing can save you from the zombies...not even Barack Obama's text messages. Anyway, this is nothing compared to what people already have the capability to do with your handset. As long as it's a one-way transmission and no receiving on their part, okay.

HAHAHA. Nothing like some good old fashioned fire power to save you from zombies. I'll take a text message about flash flooding and golf ball sized hail storms though.

Big brother keeping track. Just like the 911 update to always be able to track phones...... not a fan. Keep the government outta my business and my bank account!

Yeah, but with technology the way it is, they can find you anyway. Just imagine how much Google could already know about you, not to mention what interested parties can learn your online banking, travel, hobbies, and much much more from your email, cookies, "aggregate" data, cell phone use, etc. That's the price you pay. Might as well use that for some good and tell me when my house is about to land in Oz.

Just to put all you Obama-phobes at ease, these will be used in emergency situations only. If you ever listen to the radio or watch TV you have seen or heard these alerts, mostly for weather situations. FYI all of these messages are coordinated at the state level. The presidential-level message is a new addition and just there for worst-case scenarios. Hopefully we will never see it activated as it would probably be really bad news if it were.
