Preventing upgrade to 10?

I recently got a seasonal job that requires an app, and that app will not work on Android 10 or 11. So in order to perform this job, I had to downgrade my 3a to Android 9. Now I need to prevent it from updating to 10.

I turned off the auto update in developer options, but the phone keeps implying that if I restart, it is going to update to 10. And I can't have it do that.

Am I understanding this correctly? How do I ensure that it won't update? I don't want to do a restart, only to find I can't use this app anymore, and can't work.

You might want check out xda forums , possibly might need root to do this , I know how to stop them on Samsung phones. It will eventually update to next version even after delaying it couple times.

Wow, just an editorial note -- what is going on with that IT department that they're requiring you to use an app that forces your phone to be a full two Android versions behind? It's a security risk.:-\

Better yet, if App is job related, perhaps the employer could provide an old Prepaid Android burner phone. Typically, seasonal jobs generate minimal income so not really fair to temporary employees.

To answer your questions: They have a limited number of Android phones available. They are very crap phones, some Samsung J3 or similar. The company is UPS, and they are paying me $25/hr, plus miles. And yes, I was shocked that of all the companies, UPS is that far behind. Supposedly they put out a memo that says they are working to fix the issue, but it won't be available until 2021. I couldn't believe that somehow UPS is further behind in technology than Amazon (I've driven Amazon Flex before, but this pays WAY better). I read somewhere that they might be paying a a stipend for you using your phone as well, but that's not confirmed(edit: just checked my timecard, and there is a $5/daily stipend for phone).

If I recall correctly you can set your phone to only update over wifi, and it will only update over wifi while on and charging. So as long as you don't charge it while it's on and connected to wifi it'll never update the os. I did this with my pixel to delay the update to 10. You'll still get the constant nags though lol.

The only way to ensure that the phone doesn't update is to freeze the update app - and to do that you have to root the phone, since the update app is a system app. (And rooting prevents the phone from updating anyway - updating a phone that may have had system updates is dangerous - it could permanently brick the phone, so the update app reports that the update failed as soon as it does the root check [which is still about 25% through the process for some reason].)

You’d be surprised at how many companies use older applications.....I did a one year contract with an insurance company, $25 billion USD in assets two years ago. The company laptop was brand new and Lotus Notes is the email system the came installed and used. They made a big deal about upgrading to Outlook email system if beta testing was successful. Let that sink in for a few minutes.

Anyways just buy a cheap burner phone that’s stuck on the OS you need and let the stipend pay for a cheap plan or accept their crap phone. This isn’t rocket science...and not worth jeopardizing @ $25/hour it pays for itself after 2 hours.
