Preview text options?

Is there a way to preview a text (or at least who it is from) on the lock and/or home screen?

Depends on the app you're using, but most should allow you to do it as long as you didn't block it in the Notification settings. From the app you're using for Messages, tap and hold and 'drag' to the Info icon, find the Notification section, and see if the preview and show in lockscreen options are active.

VZW Message+ allows this - just confirmed on my phone. You can even reply while on the Always On lock screen.

With the default Messaging app it's either you get a name AND preview of the message or just a generic "new message" notification. I prefer having the name show without any of the message content. Textra and many other messaging apps have more granular control of the settings. I personally use Textra, but others will let you. If you don't mind the actual content of the message showing along with the name of the sender you can enable it in the Messages app settings.
