Previous iphone guy here, need some help

Ive had my incredible for almost a week now and am enjoying it, sorry if these are dumb questions but im a newb in would feel more comfortable making sure on a few things.
Ive read lots of forums and this page http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/howto-root-the-htc-droid-incredible/. From what I understand i need to root and thats what allows me to install custom roms and kernels?? What I am wanting to do for now is just install a custom kernel to overclock. Would my steps be
1. use unrevoked
2. install the kernel i want onto my sd
3. boot into clockworkmod and choose my kernel to install??

also, when froyo is released its as simple as using the link down at the bottom of the web page i posted, and basically load that and ill be unrooted and ready to ota froyo???

Your steps are correct just make sure you do a backup before you install the new kernel or any rom. A good backup can save you if the new kernel or rom has problems on your phone.

I'm assuming going back to stock is as easy as the direction you provided but since I've never tried it I can't be positive.

Hey jredcop, welcome to AC!

That link lays it out perfectly, and I have successfully used the steps to unroot to update the radio. That said, carefully consider before removing root access to take the OTA. There have been reports from XDA that the current root process will be broken afterwards and will take some time to rework. As you will find around the boards here at AC and other places, there are a number of 2.2 ROMs that work well and will likely be updated when the official drop hits. There are a number of great developer's that are proud to share their work.

ok did my root!! one question..now when im in clockworkmod there is and update.zip file after used unrevoked...what is that?? do i need to install it?

No just delete it from your SD card. You are good to go!
