Pro-Mode on Pixel 6 Pro

I hope Google releases some type of Pro Mode for the Pixel phones. Also open up the ability to shoot 50MP photos. I think the Pixel cameras are the best, but Pro Mode would take them over the top. Side note, I think the next Pixel should have S-Pen support. I'm not saying it should come with an S-Pen but it would be cool if it supported it for picture editing.

It would be nice but I'm not sure if Google would offer it. I think their goal with the camera is that the user takes a photo, Google's AI/smarts will figure out how to process the shot and it spits out the best photo.

It'd definitely make sense to add one, especially for the Pro models, but I don't know if that's the direction Google would want to go.

Welcome to Android Central! Maybe they'll start adding USI stylus compatibility some time in the future? https://universalstylus.org/

That's my biggest hope but it won't do me any good on my P6P since I'm guessing that's a hardware thing instead of software. Since I came from only Samsung Note phones since the Note 2, my biggest missed feature is the S-Pen.

What irks me is the USI stylus is compatible with my Chromebook I got a year ago, so there should be no reason to keep that feature from their flagship phone unless it was too late in the design process to implement it.

I used the pro mode on my Galaxy phones quite frequently. I don't want the phone setting what IT thinks is the correct brightness for my picture or video. There are times when I want to select the correct setting. Pics can be edited easy enough after the fact, but video isn't quite as easy. They definitely need to add this. Allow me to set fixed ISO or apertures

the aperture is fixed on the p6 & p6p. the only phone i know with a variable aperture is the sony xperia pro i. maybe you are meaning shutter speed.

Wow! I'm still using an LG G4 and can't believe a new phone that's so Camera-Centric doesn't have a Manual mode like mine does!

It's not the phone that has a Manual Mode, it's the Camera App that does. If you want a Manual Mode there are a number of Android Camera Apps you can download from the Play Store that will give you your desired Manual Mode. Try them out and use the one you like.

More than likely the reason that Pixel's don't have a Manual Mode is that in the hands of amateurs Manual Mode will give less than desirable results. And that probably includes more than 90% of point-and-shoot camera users. It wouldn't take long for Pixels to get a bad camera reputation. Google wisely left the thinking up to the camera!

Interesting point on manual mode:
https://www.androidcentral.com/i-wish-pixel-had-manual-camera-controls

As for why? Who knows; however, holding a feature back due to most not knowing how to use it is ludicrous. Put it out there and majority of the people will not even touch it, but why punish those who want it?

And yes, there are some apps, but I would guess, a built in feature by the manufacture is usually better than an add on app. But hard to compare since why would someone add an app to provide manual control over a phone camera if that control already exists.

And as a person in the 10% who understands manual control for photos (however, 90 percent of my photo are taken with the camera in aperture priority; not full manual), I quickly decided that using Open Camera on my Pixel 4XL gave me great control however, regardless of the control, the photos as compared to my Nikon D850s with pro lenses was night and day, or maybe dream vs. nightmare. Therefore, I carried the big heavy D850 with a big heavy camera attached as well as one or two in a backpack.

And I cannot even guess when was the last time I used that all on my Pixel.

Well, I there are times when I don't want it to auto adjust brightness or I want to change the brightness on my own and it's not possible.

yes that is possible. that is not considered a "pro" feature. a pro feature would be manually setting the ISO or manually setting the shutter speed. but what you want is available right now. when you open the camera app, if you single tap anywhere inside the view area you will then see 3 sliders. before taking the photo you can adjust the color temperature, contrast and brightness.

Ah. cool. I didn't realize I didn't have that option checked on the setting menu. Thanks! :)

I think those are the only adjustments I've ever made on my G4 and all I would ever need, so glad they're on the P6s. Though it has ISO and Shutter Speed, I always leave those as Auto.

But then that's why auto mode would still be available. If people are using the manual camera modes, are just changing a bunch of settings and their photos are turning out poor, they can easily just jump back into the auto mode and have the camera work out what the best shot it.

There are just situations where Google's algorithms just don't get it right, and more flexibility around the camera would come in handy.

Maybe you're giving the average phone camera user too much credit for actually thinking about what they're doing? :p

Possibly, you're giving them too little credit? Give it to them if they use it they use it. No harm no foul. The phone manufacturers like to place worthless apps on phones what's a few more?

Talking high-end such as the Pixel 6 pro S22 Ultra.

Even if they weren't thinking about what they're doing and they just open the camera app, it will default to auto mode, so they can just snap a photo and the app will do all the work. For those that want more flexibility around the shot that they want, there's currently no option for them. And even if they want to tweak settings of a photo, and they mess it up spectacularly in the Pro camera settings, they can just close and open the camera app and it's back to auto mode again.

There's really no negative to adding a Pro mode to the camera. Those who have no use for it don't have to touch it, but those that want that flexibility/control over the camera will benefit from it.

My G4 gives you the option of Simple, Auto, or Manual Modes for photos, pretty simple and effective. Don't know why a phone with a camera as one of it's main selling points wouldn't include the flexibility to let the user choose.
