Problem using micro usb cable with nexus 10

My new Nexus 10 32gb running KitKat will not recognise any device including a 16gb USB stick drive (FAT32) connected using a micro USB cable adapter. When I connect the same micro USB cable adapter to my Jelly Bean Android phone or 7 inch tablet running ICS it works fine. Any help and advice appreciated.

are you using a USB OTG cable and do you have Nexus Media Importer or similar app installed?
