When I go to Settings > About phone > System updates, the screen just stays black and all I see is the top notification bar (3g, signal, battery, time).

Anyone know why this is?

I'm on Android 2.2.1, rooted with Fission_2.5.7_BE

I don't have that issue, but I am not rooted. Maybe the root is stopping you from being able to go to that screen?

Not sure, never checked it since I rooted the phone months ago. I just want to make sure I'll be able to get the gingerbread update (hopefully) Friday.

If you remove, freeze, or rename any of the "bloatware" you will not get the update. Also, any custom ROM's will not get the update. You will have to SBF back to stock in order to be able to get the update.

I rooted my phone so long ago that I forgot how I did everything. I don't remember what "SBF back to stock" means. I can't just open up Z4root and click "un-root"?

Also, I would like to save all my text messages (both the messages themselves and the # that shows how many were sent/received from each person). I know that I can do that with Titanium backup, but is there a way to do that if the phone is not rooted?

Your custom ROM will block you from getting the update. There is an excellent post in the rooting/romming/hacking section of this forum that will help you SBF.
