problem with connecting note 2 to desktop

this is a relatively new problem to me. i plug my phone in to desktop. it connects, then disconnects. or illget a message saying device could run faster on a 2.0 usb port(my computer is only a yr old, to my knowledge they should be 2.0). occasionally it will stay connected, other times not. i have no problems charging my phone with the usb cable in a wall. could my usb ports be bad? both of them?
