Problems after failed root attempt

So my boss and I have the same epic 4gs, I got his to root on 1st attempt, but mine I have never been able to root, trying different cables, computers, etc, it always fails.
So after a failed root attempt I seem to have problems such as icons disappearing, high batter usage, and application crashes. Is the only way to resolve this by flashing back to the Sprint build? I loose everything every time I do this. Any ideas as to why my phone won't root?

Thanks

I'm a newbie, so bear with me...

I used odin to flash to the newest sprint stock version because OTA kept failing for some reason. I then tried to root, so I could install clockwork backup, and it failed several times. Now I'm having issues like high battery usage, force close of certain applications, etc.

My assumption is that I will need to re-flash with Odin to resolve these issues. Am I correct? Can you point me in the direction of the stock sprint rom, as I deleted it and now seem to have trouble locating it on the forum.

Thanks

What is it failing at and any other information can be of great help.

You can avoid manually rooting and flash using Odin a prerooted version of EC05 ready to go then you can choose to leave it as is or run custom ROMs.

[ROM][ODIN][RFS/EXT4][NOCIQ] EC05 Stock Plus (Main thread link)

If you plan on just staying stock build and use the root for removing bloat, options to backup your device and use wireless tethering then use the EC05 Stock Plus RFS w/ClockworkMOD 2.5 version.

If you plan on eventually flashing themes, trying custom ROMs, etc.. then use
EC05 Stock Plus EXT4 w/ClockworkMOD 3.0.0.6

Hey thanks for all the info! I think i will just stay stock; I'd like to root for backup ability but it just ain't happening with my particular phone. Like i said, I can get my bosses 4g to root no problem. I'm getting stuck in the one click root. It just hangs a few times with the adb.exe error and after killing the processing, unplugging phone, rebooting phone, finally i get it to go to next step, then it hangs on the first write.

Could be a cable related issue... I know it works on one device but maybe not on the other... Most ADB/Odin related connection problems are the result of using the factory provided cable or a cable that has gone bad.. Sure it may still charge the phone, etc. but it fails on rooting/odin.

I've tried multiple cables and Odin works. I give up.
I'm looking at the Fix Bricked phone thread, and I see 3 roms. Which one is the current Sprint stock version?

Jasonb225,
What current version do you have on your EPIC, if it is Froyo EB13, which was the horrible OTA update that bricked a lot of phones thank you very much.. anyways.. not that rant.. the only way to get off that ROM that has worked for me is you will have to do a factory data reset (which wipes the device, back it up please) and then when it comes back up, before you even sign into gmail, go to system updates and choose update firmware to get to EC05. Then you can rock and roll with root!

EB13 OTA did not brick any phones. Only thing EB13 OTA was famous for was apps to sdcard problems, sdcard problems in general and a few other things but it never caused a true brick or even soft brick. It would of been pulled alot sooner than it was if it was causing bricks. Trust me I was there days before EB13 dropped right through to days afterwards working these boards and I never stumbled on anyone that was bricked from the OTA. People doing it manually using Odin or update.zip method had some soft brick issues but they were easily overcome.
