Problems with 3G data? Don't hard reset, read this first!

How did I miss this thread?.......

Fix seems to have worked, but it sounds like when I get 4G here in June, and when the 3G eHPRD is fixed I can talk and surf at the same time like AT&T says they're the only ones who can do this?

You can still do it, its just a little slower...

Also, is the factory restore the ONLY way fix this problem. To unroot and reroot will really suck.

Has anyone who used the "##778" switch tried switching back REV A to eHSPA? If so are you re-connected to the network? or do you have no network connectivity?

I swithched back and everything is working for me. I am just outside of Boston. GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry. Had to. hahah.

Actually did it yesterday. Someone else posted it in another thread and I did it when I saw it. I actually did the hard rest first before I knew about the other fix then read about switching the eHPRD 3G to the Rev A. The hard rest worked for me and I was able to finally use 3G but I thought I should try the other fix as well. I used that for a while and noticed the slower 3g speeds and bad battery life so I switched back to eHPRD 3G.

As I am sure many of you have noticed 3G data is down on your Thunderbolts. As I have discovered from some talks with Verizon techs the reason for this is that Verizon's eHPRD 3G network is down right now. This is the specialized 3G network used only on the Thunderbolt and supports voice and data at the same time and faster 3G/4G switching. Until this is fixed you can manually fix this by dialing ##778# and hitting send in your dialer. The password is 000000. This will take you to your programming screen. Go to modem settings and then Rev A, change it to enabled and then hit the menu button on your phone and commit the changes. It will tell you to reboot and the problem will be fixed as you will now use the standard Rev A 3G networked used on all other Verizon 3G devices and of course if you have 4G it will use that if its available.

There is no need to do a hard reset. Basically when you first set up the phone it automatically provisions this setting based on whether or not eHPRD is available in your area which is why when you hard reset it fixes the problem for people as the phone will then automatically change this setting to Rev A enabled since eHPRD is down.

Obviously once Verizon fixes this issue you will want to change this setting back unless of course Verizon is able to push this change out to all of the phones when the problem is fixed.

Also for those worrying this doesn't do anything to change 4G as that is unrelated so your 4G will work the same as it did before doing this.

Now I read this. Last night I went to Indiana and my whole phone went down. No internet, No 3G No 4G NOTHING! I had 2 bars showing on the phone and I could see the Verizon tower from my room on the 14th floor. I called Verizon this morning was on the phone over an hour changing this and that and nothing worked. As soon as I crossed the Illinois state line and had 4G again my phone went nuts with alert after alert of messages I missed. Verizon C/S told me to get the handset swapped out and I just did now I read this!

I showed this info to the Verizon tech and they basically ignored it. They did the usual thing, calling tech support. I have a open ticket but I don't see anything coming of it. I am going to return my phone tomorrow and hopefully get a new one. This follows my hard reset from tech support last Thursday which did nothing.

People over on AndroidForums are saying a battery pull and sim card pull is restoring their 3G, without factory reset or changing modem settings. Trying now....

Update - that didn't work for me at all. Sticking with the ##778# for now. I don't really need simultaneous voice and data, so I'm content as-is until they get a fix. Too bad though that the majority of thunderbolt users that have this issue will more than likely return the phone since they aren't checking forums and vzw has no idea how to fix besides a factory reset.

Hi everyone... newbie here. I've had my Thunderbolt since Saturday afternoon and was very puzzled by its behavior. It would often lose the 4G connection, most frustratingly in my house which is literally a block away from a tower. When it did so, 3G never kicked in.

Today the phone has been stuck on 1X all day, even here in my Manhattan office, where 4G coverage had been utterly reliable all week.

So I am most grateful for having found this thread and have implemented the ##778# fix. As soon as I did so, 1X was replaced by 4G again. Can't wait to see how it behaves at home tonight.

Good morning. I did the ##778# reset, let it reboot, but found that inside my office the phone was struggling between 3G, 1x and 4G. I am in Washington, DC where we have a very strong 4G access; however, the penetration is not nearly as good as 3G, which defaults in my building. I then reset to eHPRD and now my 3G signal is great, no waffling between or 1x. 4G is still great outdoors and at home. On a side note, I've been running this on 3/4G all morning since 7 a.m. and doing a lot of configuration with this thread. I have been using wifi at home and at work to save battery. The funny thing is by keeping wifi off and using 3/4G my battery is only down to 80%. Lots of TB goodness today.

I'm a little confused. Is this an issue that everybody is supposed to be having? Because I have had no problems at all with 3G. I Live and Work in a 4G area... but at work we have 3G verizon repeaters throughout the building and my 4G signal inside the building is very weak... so as a result my phone is constantly flipflopping between 3G and 4G and causes my battery to die ridiculously fast. So, I have been turning off 4G while at work this problem goes away. I haven't had any issues that I've seen while on 3G. Should I do this "fix" anyway? Will I need this fix if I travel outside of the 4G area? What exactly is affected by this problem?

Thanks!

jdport, that is what was happening for me when I did the ##778, it was bouncing around between 3 and 4G and then just went to 1x over the past few days. If you are getting 3G just fine, but the only problem is that you are in that "tween" state of 3/4G, I'd turn wifi on in your building and use that if available. It will turn off your 3/4G radio while on wifi. Hope that answers your question.

I've tried this back and forth a few times. It apparently isn't fixed yet, but what's annoying is that doing this tosses me into Eastern time and I then have to go back and reset the phone's clock. I finally put it on non-auto (chose CST manually) from VZW so I don't need to keep doing this. I don't need my phone waking me up an hour early, I don't get enough sleep as it is!

Does this also apply to areas that have no 4G coverage at all? I have already disabled the LTE via the *#*#4636#*#* menu.

I live in an LTE area, but work on the fringe of 4G coverage... I get sporadic 4G connectivity from the office.
I set my preferred network type to LTE mode in the testing menu, and am getting much better 3G connectivity (go figure) - and my 4G at home seems to be more stable.

I don't know if this will help the folks in non-LTE areas, but it doesn't require a reboot to try it. (I usually cycle the radio with the button on the test page though).

I do use wifi when i'm at home, but at work it's not available. I find that turning off the 4G and locking onto 3G gives me pretty good battery life during the day at work. So if 3G seems to be working , should I be doing this fix? Or should I just leave it? What is the downside of this fix?
