Problems with 3G data? Don't hard reset, read this first!

how do we find out when the eHRPD network is back?

im not having issues at home so havent changed it yet, but when i was away i had problems and was just wondering if i should bother switching or if fixed by time i go away again this weekend

You just keep trying and see if you have the same trouble, or not.

As I am sure many of you have noticed 3G data is down on your Thunderbolts. As I have discovered from some talks with Verizon techs the reason for this is that Verizon's eHPRD 3G network is down right now. This is the specialized 3G network used only on the Thunderbolt and supports voice and data at the same time and faster 3G/4G switching. Until this is fixed you can manually fix this by dialing ##778# and hitting send in your dialer. The password is 000000. This will take you to your programming screen. Go to modem settings and then Rev A, change it to enabled and then hit the menu button on your phone and commit the changes. It will tell you to reboot and the problem will be fixed as you will now use the standard Rev A 3G networked used on all other Verizon 3G devices and of course if you have 4G it will use that if its available.

There is no need to do a hard reset. Basically when you first set up the phone it automatically provisions this setting based on whether or not eHPRD is available in your area which is why when you hard reset it fixes the problem for people as the phone will then automatically change this setting to Rev A enabled since eHPRD is down.

Obviously once Verizon fixes this issue you will want to change this setting back unless of course Verizon is able to push this change out to all of the phones when the problem is fixed.

Also for those worrying this doesn't do anything to change 4G as that is unrelated so your 4G will work the same as it did before doing this.

Anyone know if this is still necessary?

I'm fine at home with 4G, but it does seem like 3G is flaky when I'm out and about. Wondering if it's just where I am or if the new network is still iffy.

I find it just a little irritating that I called Verizon and spoke to a Tech who basically said, sorry it's just seems to be you or where your at. I lost 3G and 4G halfway through the day today. So I come on here, see this thread, do the Rev. A fix and BAM! My 3G and 4G is back. Maybe some of the people online here need to go get jobs at Verizon and replace the assclowns working in Tech Support.

Thanks to the OP who posted this fix!

I used this trick on 3/31 after my ThunderBolt got stuck in 1X. Today, I changed the setting back to normal. Now 4G and everything else is working fine. Don't know when it was fixed locally or if my phone will get stuck on 1X again, but for five hours now the network has been performing normally for me.

My opinion is that this is a "niche" setting. I think it may only work for a small percentage of folks. Just depends on the local tower you are talking to. But, since this is actually a 3G technology, my guess is that it is implemented almost everywhere. It had no effect for me whatsoever.

Having said that, IMHO, the much more useful setting is the "Phone Info" switch (i.e. *#*#4636#*#*) to toggle between 3G/4G. I use that occasionally and it always satisfies my needs (I use a 3G Network Extender at home). Personally, unless you see an immediate difference, I'd leave the eHRPD switch alone.

Im glad to know others are having same problem today. I kept having internet connection problems most of the day today myself.

i found that my 3g actually is worse (goes in out sometimes) with this setting when im in all 3g area...turning back to eHRPD to see what happens

Hey everyone - hope this isn't repeat info/old news...read through as much of the info as I could stand but didn't see anyone mention anything. I called Verizon last week (4/1 I think?) and they still had no resolution to the 'no 3G issue' which i was experiencing. I had tried a data reset...but didn't help.

Today I called back and the tech was surprised to see that there was no longer an 'alert' regarding the Thunderbolt 3G issues...after a few minutes she told me another data reset should fix the issue. I was skeptical...but I tried it. I was in a 4G area at the moment, but sure enough, when I went into my office where I never get a 4G signal, I had 3G!

Happy to finally be able to have a full-time data connection on this thing. Such a great phone! Just need to work on keeping my battery charged, and it'll be perfect.

soboness5, thanks for sharing this.

When you say "data reset", do you mean
A) doing a factory reset on your phone (thus wiping all the data),
or
B) something that Verizon pushes to your phone?

I'd be interested in what you mean as well. I have NO 3G data at all coming to my phone, have to use wi-fi to get data. I already did a factory reset and it did not resolve the problem.

I believe these reports of "no 3G data" actually are trying to say "no data". Not 1x, not 3G and not 4G. That is different than saying "no 3G data" which infers that the problem is with only 3G.

Whenever I have seen this issue, which I believe is systemic to every TB device out there given the same environment, setting Phone Info (*#*#4636#*#*) to CDMA auto (PRL) (1x and 3G but no 4G) has restored data (either 1x or 3G depending on what you actually have).

2 days and im already tired of this phone, everyone talked about how great it is and how dung samsung is meanwhile this has been bug after bug now the last redeeming quality of this phone doesnt work, non of the fixes mentioned have worked. So im going to just write up some tutorials up and send this phone on its way.

I'm there DroidXcon. I've tried the above, but it only works for a short while and then everything returns to tiny intermittent sessions of 3g , in a 4g area. Tech support rplaced phone, no change.
To me this happens mostly when using the mobile Wifi spot. Which is one of my prime uses /reasons for the phone, and 4g. Maybe just go with Iphone, and wait for 2 years until they really get 3.5-4g working.
When is the bionic coming?

I have 3 days to decide on return on this one. Second TB device. Good 4G coverage in my area. Set with Rev A to enable and CDMA auto (PRL) just now and were I normally get 1x and data drops I'm solid 3G for 20 mins. With Rev A to enable and LTE mode the phone is useless!!!

If you want to read the story, check it out here

Tier 2 told me yesterday that reprovisioning the SIM does nothing for this issue. A SIM can only be provisioned 1 time per phone number. Then it's off to a new SIM. To me it sounds like SIMs are not like cable modems, where you can have your cable provider reflash the bin file.

Thanks a million...... Was talking to a tech support person a Verizon who did not know any thing about this. I even asked her about a specialized 3g network that enabled tbolt users to talk and surf. She said only with 4g or wifi. Now it all makes sense! Thanks again. Can't wait til 4g is back but this makes it bearable!

So I did the ##778# and it was working fine for a bit..then all of a sudden even my Rev.A 3g was kicking off. I finally just set it back to normal and used 1x all day... having constant 1x is better then every now and again 3g. might just be my area I dont know.

Getiing 1X all day in fringe areas(savannah, bluffton-sc). Read this forum post. Tried the ##78 adjustment. It showed 3g for a minute.....then nothing. No 3g, no 1x....no data whatsoever. Went back into Settings and set it back and now just gettinv 1x again. Anyone else.
