problems with my Contacts app

Starting recently, when I try to open my Contacts app, it doesn't open and I instead get a message 'unfortunately, contacts has stopped.'

Does anyone have some suggestions for what I should do--something that won't make me lose all my contact info.

As a first step, go into the Application Manager and clear cache for the contacts app. It won't affect your data and may solve the problem.

Are your contact synced with Google? If you're not sure, log into Gmail on a computer, and in the upper left, click below the Google logo where it says "Gmail." Select Contacts from the drop-down, and see if all your contacts are there. If so, you don't have to worry about losing them.
