Hey All,

I tried searching the forums but I didn't really see anything in particular that would help me. Basically I am able to setup my wallet successfully but I can't seem to use it. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong when trying to pay so I contacted wallet support which just made me even more confused.

I'm trying to understand if physical contact is necessary to initiate the payment. If so I'm doing things correctly but something else is wrong.

"Hello David,

Thanks for your email. I understand that you are unable to use the Google Wallet Mobile App on your Nexus 4 for your in-store purchases.

If you are having trouble tapping and paying with the Google Wallet mobile app, here are some troubleshooting tips.

vv
6. Tap the back of your phone against the contactless terminal to pay. Please note that the phone should be held 1-2 inches from the contactless terminal and that large battery packs may interfere with this process.

Hey Abi,

I'm slightly confused at some of the directions. It says to keep the phone 1 - 2 inches from the reader but also says to tap my devices against it? Can you please clarify?

Hello David,

Thanks for your reply. I understand that you are a bit confused on how to tap your device from the contactless terminal when making an in-store purchase.

You should tap your device 1-2 inches against the contactless terminal. It means that you should be tapping the back of your phone 1-2 inches away from the contactless terminal, not the front part of your device.

Tap it. It's not any more difficult than holding it 1-2 inches away. :p If tapping doesn't work, then try holding it 1-2 inches away.

Am I crazy though? Tapping and Holding Away are different things right?

Like tapping your brother in the face while in the back of the car = instant punishment
Hovering your finger 1-2 inches away and saying "I'm not touching you I'm not touching you I'm not touching you I'm not touching you" = maybe no ice cream

Ha ha that's true but the paypass terminal won't care quite as much as your brother (or your parents) if you do it wrong!

I always tap, and it works. I guess I never tried hovering over the terminal, but I suppose it might work. As far as I know the actual tapping doesn't do anything; you just need to get close enough.

Alright so now if we move on from the initial inquiry the problem is I AM tapping my Nexus 4 against the terminal but _nothing_ happens. What can I do?

Is NFC enabled? Settings >> More... under Wireless & Networks >> NFC (make sure it's checked). If you have Google Wallet set up and NFC is enabled, then SOMETHING should happen! If not, I'm not sure what to tell you.

What stores even are set up for this? I haven't seen any places in my area advertising it.

In my area the stores that have Paypass terminals include McDonald's (certainly you have one nearby; it's worth a greasy burger to try out Paypass, believe me!), Sheetz, and CVS.

And if it doesn't work, it may be a problem with that specific terminal. I had trouble at my local CVS with the same front register terminal on two different occasions, but the one at the pharmacy worked fine.

I think what google is trying to say is physically tap the back of the phone to the reader and THEN continue to hold it 1 to 2 inches away until the transaction completes. That's what I did the one time I used it and it worked, but did take holding it a couple seconds before it went through.

My Google Wallet didn't work from the day I got my Nexus 4 in December but it seems the latest update to the Google Wallet app did the trick. Did you trying resetting the app?

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Android Central Forums

If you are in Salt Lake City or San Antonio, you probably have an ISIS sim in your phone that borks google wallet. Go to the T-Mo store and get a regular sim card...

I used mine at 7-11 this weekend. Not sure why but mine was stuck on the Set up Wallet screen for about 30 seconds before it authorized. Now when i actually tap the icon for google wallet it only displays that for half a second before it asks me for my PIN. Im guessing i had a slow network connection or something.
My previous experience was when i had my EVO LTE and GS3 on Sprint. IT always worked with them and seemed much faster.
What i did was wait for the cashier to finish ringing me up then i actually set my phone down on the paypas terminal for a few seconds. Once the two devices chat with each other you can remove it as the cash register has your info.
Places i know of that have them are CVS, 7-11, McDonalds and Whataburger.
It will take you a bit of trail and error but practice makes perfect.

At McDonald's I had to touch and count to 2 before removing. I hope this helps. Another thought, touch it until you see the screen activate is helpful too. Just takes a tiny bit of practice.

I am not in either of those areas but thank you for the tip. Unless it's possible they are rolling out to the east coast!

Thank you all for your tips, it's very possible I was just being impatient with it. I'm used to my Amex where it's just a quick tap and it reads. I'll give it another go and post my results :)

maybe you are supposed to hold the phone 1-2 inches away and then tap the phone, not the contactless terminal...at least that's one way to read the instructions, i suppose

Guys thank you for all the help! I figured it out!

My first transaction was paying the ETF from Verizon LOL!

Firstly I was not being patient enough. You have to hold it for at least a second or two before it works.

Secondly after it makes it wallet noise it prompts you for the pin. After you enter your pin you have to press it BACK to the payment contact and it works.

This can almost all be blamed on the fact that I didn't want to look stupid pressing my phone up against a contact and not having anything happen. Even now when I pay with my phone people go WOW you can do that? But if I didn't get the WOW I would get the "Dude you're putting your phone up against that, are you stupid, tired, or both?"

LOL i picked up some sudafed and contact lens cleaner today at CVS. The pharmacist tech who checked me out said it was cool to see someone use their phone to pay for something.
I told her i only do it for the cool factor. LOL So your exactly right, its nice to be able to use my phone to pay for something.. Its just different.

My experience as well, unfortunately the cashier was butthurt about her iPhone when she realized you needed to have android to run it.
