Problems with speakers and headphone jack

I gave my old TF101 to my nephew for Xmas. He has loved every single minute of it. I bought him a pair of headphones as well. But tonight he ran into a problem that I couldn't explain nor do I know how to fix. He said his headphones didn't work. Sure enough, it was turned on but didn't work. The speakers worked fine. I tested his headphone on my Samsung tablet and it worked fine. Then I rebooted his tablet. I plugged in the headphones and it works. But when I unplugged, the speakers didn't work.

So essentially, when the speakers work, the headphones doesns't and vice versa. Is there something I can do about this? Somewhere in settings? I can't find it.

Make sure the jack is clear of debris. Try using a damp toothpick to root around, or blow the jack out with a can of compressed air.
