Programming NFC tags - anyone?

Hi all,

Just reading about buying a bunch (10 to 15) of tags for around 10-bucks and programming them with apps from the Play store.

The only tag I would use right now would be to unlock the phone PIN as Moto Skip does.

Anyone know if the tags can be programmed to do that or is Mot's Skip something special that way?

Thanks

I bought a 10 pack + Keychain of Whiz Tags from Amazon. I got the 512b Topaz tags (vs standard tags that are 138b) not realizing that something like changing volume only takes 4 bytes. I have one tag I made that may not be possible with the standard amount of memory.

I programmed the Keychain to set my settings for the car.

My biggest tag sets up my workout settings. It sets each individual volume, turns on bluetooth, turns off wifi, pauses (so I can turn on my bluetooth headphones) and then it makes Text-to-Speech announcement "Starting" and then starts a countdown activity for my workout in CardioTrainer.

They're fun to use. I use the Trigger app to program them. Trigger also works with other actions and works like a limited but user friendly version of Tasker.

Thanks for the quick replies, playing the video on the 3rd PC monitor as I type. :)

@dmark44:
Thanks for the description. I was unaware of the different memory size and I too would probably go for the 512b.

The reason I asked the question here was the Lock-screen-PIN means the phone is un-usable at that time.

I am unsure if Moto uses a special method with the NFC to activate the phone when it is essentially locked.

Watching the video that Clocks provided, the NFC requires an acceptance tap, so not sure if it will work without the Moto Skip, which by the way are now out of stock.

Yeah, the magic of the Skip is that it contains a magnet that activates NFC while your screen is off and your phone is locked. That way you can tap the Skip anytime. Even the extra stickers that come with the Skip require you to press the power button first.

Thanks, I have ordered some 512 tags that will be here Monday. I will see what I can do to force my will. :)

Anyone know if Samsug TecTiles are compatible with the built in NFC in my Moto X? I've got a bunch left over from my S3, and anytime I place the phone on one all I get is a screen that says "New tag collected" with no available options. I've been using the Trigger app with success, but prefer to use the built in functions.

Apparently the original TecTiles are not even compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4. There's a newer TecTile 2 that's compatible with the S4 and might possibly work with the Moto X.
