I finally got around to requesting a Project Fi SIM. I plan and using it for some overseas trips later this year to Bermuda and the UK.

My main question is can I just swap SIM cards, install the app and run with it? Do I need some sort of new FW update? I see a lot of talk about these Fi specific builds. Once I have the new SIM how can I get a new number to use on Fi?

I believe you'll need to activate your SIM and then suspend Fi service when not in use. As for the FW, I don't know. I ordered my 6P when my Fi invite came. The Fi support team seems to be fantastic and should be able to answer your questions.

The minute you install the fi sim, verizon flags it as your leaving them and you will responsible for any early termination fees. That's my understanding.

Nope. Verizon is only notified if you port your Verizon number to Fi. Keep paying for your Verizon number and they don't care.

I use Verizon as my primary service and have Fi for a number of devices... As long as you have a compatible handset (Nexus 6, 6P or 5X) to activate it then you can jam the SIM into any Verizon Global compatible handset and it works... most of them require that you set the APN settings and honestly it's a LOT easier to set up on the Data-Only SIM than the voice/primary one. I have issues with making/receiving calls on the main SIM in anything except a Nexus (Nexus 5 also works great as long as it has the Jan 2016 release of Lollipop) but data is fine on everything I've put the SIMs into.

Verizon doesn't carrier lock their devices which means you can edit the APN and you will get a "Non-VZW SIM detected" message but it will work as long as you create a correct APN entry.

Excellent, I have the 6P so I should be good. Planning on using it for travel on my two trips this year to London and Bermuda.

I have had my Verizon account suspended for 3 months now and have been using project Fi.

I just switched from Verizon to Fi as my primary service. I am hoping it works for me. I had unlimited data plan and it was getting a little too expensive. Before receiving the SIM card in mail today, I had already saved all the information on Fi website for porting my number from Verizon. It took a whole minute or maybe two to finish the porting process after I popped my new SIM card in. Verizon immediately flagged my account inactive. Upon talking to the VZW customer support, they said the account has been automatically cancelled since I ported my number to a new carrier and I will receive my final bill soon. Also, I have 3 months under their "Win Back" program to go back to VZW and get back account and unlimited data back. I'm definitely scared of the change but the first few hours have been great. I even have LTE signal which seems to be just as fast as Verizon's. I am even receiving texts - took about half an hour to an hour for them to start coming in. Could have been less but I didn't keep checking. I'm happy so far but we are literally talking about the first few hours of use. Oh, and I'm in Colorado.

Same here - popped in my new fi sim a couple hours ago and took about 5 minutes before att sent an email telling me my number is now gone (account still open and active if i want to just get a new number - of course i'm not, i'm closing that account) and my fi 6p started getting calls and texts.

16 days in for me and couldn't be happier. Only at .019 mb used. I signed up for the 1gb deal for $30 and should get a $5 credit back
