Pros and Cons to the Captivate

I went from the iPhone to the Cappy. I'll never go back.

Battery life- I use my phone literally ALL day. If I'm not making calls, its streaming audio of some kind. I have a 10 hour work day and an hour of commuting. By the time I get home, I still have 30% or more, and thats if I spend a bunch of time on Angry Birds. However, I also don't find it all that difficult to charge the phone when needed. Seriously, that is what the battery is for, use it.

Call quality is excellent. So is bluetooth.

GPS is flaky on mine. It was on the first one as well. It's better with the leaked 2.2 update. It is however, a software issue. Something isn't quite talking. This is a hit and miss issue, and I just don't care that much about it.

Screen is incredible! I had an iPhone 4 first, and returned it 1 week shy of the 30 days. I'm very glad I did! Retina display my arse, give my AMOLED!

The screen is Gorilla Glass, and VERY durable. I do have the AT&T protector on it, but it has taken some pretty good hits, and is still perfect.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the phone. Android does take a bit to get used to after so long in the Apple world, and some things take a bit more tweaking, but you can do a lot more with the device.

I chose to get the aria in the end. The captivate has amazing specs but in the end the gps was a deal breaker for me. I use it way to much for it to be flaky. I do wish the aria had more space for apps and better camera quality. But those are my only issues.

I'm not goin to sit here and deny that the GPS has it's issues (on the Captivate), but in a Case-n-Point type manner...

...I used the Turn-by-Turn to get me through a 9.5 hr drive into downtown Philadelphia. Which is NOT an easy city to navigate through on your first time!

Out of the week I was there using that GPS like a bible...I only had one issue with it. It's easily a step down from my wife's Garmin, but it pulled through in the clutch.

Captivate has many pros we all know about..but a couple of cons for me at least (after a couple of mins with my daughter's iphone):

-Font is WAY too small in gmail application and it doesn't zoom..almost useless for some emails.

-Google maps is MUCH better utilized in the Iphone. One example: you can orient heading up or north up as in the "normal" mode. Another: when doing searches, it drops pins on the map and you can scroll from one to the next in the map mode instead of looking at a list.

It amazes me that an android device doesn't implement these things better

Not goin to pretend to know how the iPhone does it (it very well could be easier)...but as far as your Google Maps comments go, I've done all that on my Captivate with little trouble.

May be better utilized on the iPhone, but Gmaps on Android can work the same way. (if you touch one side of the bottom corner....think it's the "ETA"....it will take you to an overhead map where you can scroll from point to point)

I found that the battery life increases dramatically when you delete daily briefing from your screen. my phone used to die by 5 pm everyday with moderate usage with daily briefing constantly updating data from AT&T servers. Once it is deleted, I still have 50% at the end of the day with radio on for about couple hours. Amazing!!! I couldnt believe it myself. GPS is awesome on my phone. when outside, it gets a lock in seconds (Android 2.1). I dont have task killers, etc...I switched to Capt from iPhone 4. I'm happy with my Captivate. As many said, it does take some time to get used to Android, but it gets interesting everyday with unlimited customization options available (even without rooting!!!)

I don't see what you're referring to here. When doing a search that brings up multiple listings, the thing in the bottom left brings up a list but not on the map. Even in my Nokia N97, when doing a search that brings up multiple listings you could arrow forward and back to each location, while still being on maps page.

And regarding the "heads up"...how are you able to change the orientation? On an iphone you can press a button and the maps orients in the direction you're going, not always North up. Captivate doesn't do that AFAIK.

But that's not really that big a deal...the BIG deal to me is the font size in Gmail. I use Gmail a lot, and it definitely a problem. Not a deal breaker with a week to go in my 30 days, but close for sure.

I'll be perfectly honest with you...

In the first week of owning my Captivate, I used it for a 9.5 hr road trip (Turn-by-Turn Nav). In doin so I accidentally discovered all those features I described above.

Scrolling from point to point was one I could recreate (which is why I thought it was a lower corner....i.e. pressing on ETA takes you to the overhead menu).

The orientation thing was one I couldn't recreate. All I know is while there I noticed the orientation changed from "My North" to "True North" and I didn't like it one bit....basically had to close out and restart (only one in the car means I didn't have much time to fiddle with it).

Can the Android platform edit word, excel, and powerpoint docs (full edit copy/paste)? And does it support HTML5 and Flash on the internet browser? Windows 7 is starting to look appealing

Captivate purchase includes a free version of QuickOffice (get it from the AT&T market), which can edit word, excel and powerpoint. See here: Quickoffice ? Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite for Android

Not sure about about the last two.

MS Office - Yes (Docs to Go or Quick Office); HTML5 - Not sure; Flash - Yes, with 2.2 and higher.
